"The space era has so far experienced a time of relatively low cosmic ray activity," says Mewaldt. "We may now be returning to levels typical of past centuries."

Could this be one reason why we have seen warming?

There are many reasons why we have seen warming, this is just another one to add to the list!!

2 days since last sunspot seen, solar flux still at 72, SSN is 0. According to the last prediction by Hathaway we ought to have a SSN at the end of 2009 of approx. 20. Given the recent upturn in activity there is a chance that this may occur, however the sun is forecast to get quieter again so there may yet be further amendments to his forecast.

Solar monitoring continues to be very interesting.

Found this interesting article regarding cosmic rays and solar minimum.

Maybe another part of the jigsaw regarding minima & a cooler climate.

Hi Steve B I don't know whether you have read The Chilling Stars by Henrik Svensmark and Nigel Calder but they certainly believe low solar activity leads to high cosmic ray count hitting the earth which in turn leads to a cooler climate. Well worth the read.

Svensmark - been championing this guy for years. So many people on here and elsewhere fundamentally disputed his work. It's very interesting now to see how it's being received. I mean, if Spaceweather.com and NASA are now taking this guy seriously, makes you think..

brillant stuff most intresting and in depth video i watched incredible.

so now the minimum continues what happens next?

well id of thought that if this theory is correct which i think it makes alot of sence,

and the fact that nasa them selfs have said that cosmic rays have hit space age high by 20% then surely this could well send temps down a little over time and perhapes send temps down futher if this was to increase cosmic outflow.:drinks:

all is quiet and peaceful, solar flux 69 and drifting lower, most likely back to 67.

i think one gets the idea, there's just going to be one or two little sunspots from time to time.

solar cycle 24 very boring.

yet for some reason im very interested and feel the need to check twice day for updates.

I think its a bit like people that watch big brother live all night- essentially just some person sleeping, but some people still do find it gripping/ relaxing.

gripping and relaxing is a good combo.

most of its essentially countng days then a spot come along nu have to start all over :whistling:

day 5.

look at the solar wind thats really low.

Yeah slowed down a lot, hopefully the sun has gone back to sleep again. It would be nice if it went into hibernation all WinterPosted Image
