Took me 20 visits to realise where I want be. My heart belongs to England, but the call of the mountains and the snow was too much. Austria ,its scenery, climate and people are just irresistable.

Hi, I have just arrived back from my holiday home in Oberhof in Germany which is situated in the middle mountains. Although there was not a great deal of snow it was good to see an early snow fall. The attached pics were taken on the 20th October. It is interesting to see the autumn leaves and snow together!

I hear the first ski races in Finland have been cancelled for next weekend due to the warmest early winter weather for decades. They have been moved to Reitalm in Austria.

Im also worried a 'repeat' of last year is on the cards for the southern alps, especially for late Jan and early feb another snow drought looks on the cards for the southern alps and the western italian alps (some call them the maritime alps) John hokmes is good on mountain meteorology me thinks, John...whats your synopsis on the mountain forecasts for europe in 2008
