I have done an update for a while but will try and get back into the habit of doing them and don't want to lose this thread from vanishing off the bottom.

What a great way to sum up how little we've had off the Atlantic recently! :cc_confused:

Well after a stormless winter last chance saloon before spring for us. Already a slight downgrade as per other storms which have turned mainly into a mere puff of wind along the front as it passes. I think we hit 60 mph once this winter and I mean once.

5 days with gales here this winter ( met' office definition ) which is well below average but better than winter 2005/06 which had only 2. To be fair though two of the gales this season occurred either side of midnight and so accounted for 4 days.

Highest gust so far this winter is 76 mph on Dec' 19th.

I'm really referring to several hours of strong winds. We've had brief windy spells lasting about half n hour to hour when fronts have passed through but nothign substained like proper storms.

if you discount the big storm over the weekend of the 18 jan, the past 2 jan have had little in the way of major storms up here.

but last april saw a pretty decent storm so still a fair few months to go.

Agreed. We've had gale force winds for 3 or 4 hours at a time but certainly no sustained spells of gale or severe gale as in most winters. The highest mean over an hour has been around 43 mph, most winters produce an hourly mean of 55 mph or more.

I have to say this has been one of the calmest winters for lack of severe gales, none here this year as I can remember, the strongest winds were from the south overall,2005/06 was even slacker.

its fair to say though one way or another the Atlantic will be back at some point,

The summer :whistling:

Update

Latest charts show that there has been a downgrade good news for those who don't want a storm and bad news for those who want a storm but its still going to be windy.

Around Friday at 9am force 6 to 7

At Saturday 3pm force 9 to 10 but yesterday it had it further south today its moved up north.

On Sunday 3pm 24 hours later the storm still shows to move south but this time further east. Bringing force 8 to 9 in the north.

All we've had here as PIT describes is it getting a bit gusty when a front passes through. Haven't had any sustained gales at all, which is a little unusual. Certainly has been a quiet Winter in that respect. And do you know what I think will happen? I agree with SnowyOwl, the gales are bound to turn up in the Summer, again! I think there were more gales last Summer than this Winter!
