The present spell of low temperatures now fairly established across much of Northern Russian and the interior of Siberia is speeding up the Arctic Rim Sea ice formatation in the Kara Sea. Extreme cold in Verkhoyansk of the continental type is not uncommon, however some impressive low reading over the past 10 days, presently -43C, normally during the first week of November -35C is average. The cold block is also feeding more seasonal temperatures than previous early winter periods across the North European Plain and into Scandinavia.

Anyone know what's occurring with the Cryosphere Today website? I can only see info that's a week old on the main page, but when I click on the mobile app link, it is fully up-to-date. Strange

latest from IJIS... bit of an improvement.. things really start to get much colder over siberia in the next few days as a cold pool develops... widespread -35 to -40  .. over the basin some warmer air will come in but im not sure what impact this will have on ice development as yet. so watch this space...

Barents sea ice is still slow to pick up but I notice some movement in the last week. In comparison the sea ice down the east of greenland is quite advanced for this time of year.

NSIDC report for October

For most of the month, a high-pressure system sat over the Beaufort Sea, while unusually low pressure dominated the Barents Sea. In accord with Buys Ballot's Law, the area between the two pressure centers saw strong, warm winds blowing from the south. This wind pattern, in conjunction with extensive open water, led to a mean monthly temperature as high as 6 degrees Celsius (11 degrees Fahrenheit) above average in the region between the high and low pressure anomalies.

Notice how the ice to the east of greenland is all broken in the following satellite picture due to repeated low pressure systems barrelling into the gap between greenland and scandinavia.

On the (Provisional) IJIS figures Arctic Ice now stands at 10,362,813, we have moved above the 2007 figures and are now 5th in the series of 7 in the IJIS series and 29th out of 31st on the combined figures for all 31 years.

The average growth over the past week has fallen to around 87,000 per day, which is well above recent ice growth of 63,000 (2002-2008) and longer term ice growth of 67,000 sqkm per day (1979-2007)

We are now 808,421 below the 1979-2007 average figures, and 23,360 above 2003-2008 figures.

At last there are signs of Ice growth around the Kara Sea and the Chuckchi Seas, hopefully this can extend to the Barents Sea area soon.

Has anyone else noticed that the tongue of ice from the polar cap and down the east of Svalbard has melted/retreated over the last couple of weeks? It may be my ignorance on the subject but it seems unprecedented to observe sea ice melting at these latitudes as we head into December...

Whether or not we get the biting easterly next week, surely it must have a positive effect on the sea Ice around the Barents & Greenland seas?

Probably due to the Ice Breakers burning fuel and emitting huge amounts of CO2 :D

Over 6 weeks on this the above report. Latest Northern Hemisphere snow extent is impressive for so early on in the winter season, including much of The United Kingdom, I am pleased to say. Notice some early ice formation in the White Sea and Northern Baltic.
