Thanks for the welcome John.

Still remains to be confirmed which volcano is erupting and if it is in Eritrea or Ethiopia but it does look as though it's coming from Nabro in Eritrea but it is right on the border with Ethiopia

Seems like mainstream media have caught onto it here.

Largest known historical eruption in Africa: Dubbi volcano, Eritrea, 1861

Pierre Wiart1 and Clive Oppenheimer1 1 Department of Geography, University of Cambridge, Downing Place, Cambridge CB2 3EN, UK

Dubbi volcano, located in the northeast part of the Afar triangle, erupted explosively in May 1861, showering maritime trafficin the Red Sea with pumice and plunging coastal settlementsinto darkness. Earthquakes associated with the opening phaseof the eruption were felt in Yemen, and explosions were heardas far as Massawa, 330 km distant. More than 100 local inhabitantswere reported killed, possibly as a result of pyroclastic flowemplacement. By October 1861, activity switched to basalticfire-fountaining focused along a 4-km-long summit fissure thatfed several lava flows that traveled as far as 22 km. We presenta reconstruction of this unusual explosive and effusive eruptionsequence based on interpretation of contemporary accounts, analysisof satellite imagery, field work, and laboratory geochemistry. The volume of lava flows alone, 3.5 km3, makes this the largestreported historical eruption in Africa. An anomalously coldNorthern Hemisphere summer in 1862, recorded in tree-ring records, could be the result of Dubbi's sulfate aerosol veil.

ASMARA, ERITREA (BNO NEWS) -- An eruption is underway at the Dubbi volcano in the Southern Red Sea Region of Eritrea, the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) said on Monday.

The chief forecaster at the VAAC in France said the eruption at the Dubbi volcano began at around 2100 GMT on Sunday evening, sending a large plume up to 13 kilometers (8 miles) high.

This eruption could really throw global weather patterns for a six , especially as the ash heads towards the atlantic and traverses where atlantic convection originates from.

No volcano expert but what's causing all these eruptions lately?? Does one eruption have a knock on effect because up until last year I never really heared about them on the news extra?

This is exciting stuff! I like the fact that this volcano is near the equator and it can make good work of blocking sunlight.

Interesting extract from theweatherspace.com : TWS Senior Meteorologist Kevin Martin questions what this might do for hurricane season.

"We know volcanic eruptions can cause global weather pattern changes due to the ash in the stratosphere," said Martin. "But this volcano is located where tropical systems are born. Now by born I do not mean named, but the convection comes from Northwestern Africa and the ash clouds is heading into the Atlantic over the next week."

There is no way to know for certain on the effects of an African Volcanic eruption but Alaska and Russian volcanoes have been known to tamper with the global temperature and patterns.

They were talking about Dubbi volcano as they thought it was the one erupting.

i notice the update states it is the dubbi volcano - which it clearly is not!

eruption seems to have abated for now but this volcano is an unknown quantity so we will have to wait and see

Satellite shows the eruption is still ongoing, currently the ash cloud is blowing towards the setting sun creating a fantastic 'sundial' effect with the shadow of the eruption collumn on the opposing side. Be quick! Blink and you will miss it!

Interesting update on Jon Frimann's blog... (anyone unfamiliar, he runs a very good blog on all things Iceland... well worth checking from time to time)

He's highlighted activity from Katla.. looking at what he has posted it appears that katla is experiencing low level harmonic tremors at quite a depth beneath Katla and possibly from within the volcanic system itself. This would suggest that magma is moving into or around the chamber system but as Jon himself stresses this does not in itself represent a possible eruption event soon however it does signal possibly a more active phase in the volcano.

Lots of possibles and maybes but worth keeping a wee eye on.

i do keep an eye on the activity in iceland and there has been steady a number of small earthquakes within the caldera at katla. nothing particularly unusual, as it has happened on a few occasions before, but it has caught my attention

I am a bit disappointed with Nabro! I was hoping for a lot more action from it but it seems to have eased significantly...

apparently its still ongoing but the ash emissions have reduced and its now belching out sulphur dioxide
