West and northwest.

Southwest would be better but it is not what they are saying.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 9 Nov 2016 to Friday 18 Nov 2016:

It will be generally cold on Wednesday next week, and many places are likely to be dry with some sunshine. Rain is likely across the north and west though, and this will slowly move across the UK, introducing slightly milder air from out in the Atlantic. Eastern parts of the UK may hold onto the colder conditions for a few days longer than elsewhere, however it will then start to turn more unsettled with bands of rain moving through at times. There will also be some drier and brighter interludes at times, especially in southern parts of the UK. It will also be windy at times too, especially in the North where gales are possible.

UK Outlook for Saturday 19 Nov 2016 to Saturday 3 Dec 2016:

The forecast remains very uncertain for mid November to early December. Although there may be some unsettled weather to start, the windier and stormier weather looks to become less frequent later in the period. Colder, more settled conditions with local mist, fog and frost patches are likely to be more frequent, but there may still be some spells of unsettled, breezy weather, bringing rain or showers, and perhaps snow over higher ground in the north.

The idea of snow over high ground in the south east has been dropped from today's update.

UK Outlook for Thursday 10 Nov 2016 to Saturday 19 Nov 2016:

It may turn less cold for a time through the first part of this period a as weather system pushes in from the Atlantic. There will be some spells of sunshine, particularly on Thursday, before winds strengthen and rain arrives on Friday, turning wintry over the hills. Through next weekend, once the weather system has cleared, it is set to remain largely unsettled with outbreaks of rain or showers combined with some drier interludes. The winds will be strong at times, which will take the edge off of the temperatures making it feel rather cold. A similar pattern is expected to continue towards the end of this period, with milder interludes expected to be short lived.

UK Outlook for Monday 21 Nov 2016 to Monday 5 Dec 2016:

The forecast remains very uncertain for mid November to early December. Although there may be some unsettled weather to start, colder, more settled conditions with local mist, fog and frost patches are likely to be more frequent. Despite this, there may still be some spells of unsettled, breezy weather, bringing rain or showers, and perhaps snow over higher ground in the north, but generally stormy conditions look less likely that normal for the time of year.

UK Outlook for Friday 11 Nov 2016 to Sunday 20 Nov 2016:

Uncertainty is quite high for the forecast outlook through this period. On Friday, indications suggest a largely fine and dry, although still cold, day for much of the UK, although with a risk of showers affecting some coasts, and perhaps rain running into the west later. Through next weekend and the rest of the period, it is set to remain largely unsettled with outbreaks of showers, particularly for coastal areas, and with drier conditions inland. The winds will be strong at times, which will take the edge off the temperatures making it feel rather cold. Rain may push into the west again at some point, bringing slightly milder, albeit wetter weather, but this is expected to be short-lived with below average temperatures predominant.

UK Outlook for Saturday 12 Nov 2016 to Monday 21 Nov 2016:

Through next weekend the weather looks to be unsettled with persistent and heavy rain at times, which may turn to snow on higher ground in the north. Sunday looks to be drier, although still with a risk of showers for some, which again could be wintry on the hills and mountains. Through the rest of the period, it is set to remain largely unsettled with outbreaks of showers, particularly for coastal areas, and with drier conditions inland. The winds will be strong at times which will make it feel rather cold. Rain may push into the west again for a time, bringing slightly milder, albeit wetter weather, but this is expected to be short-lived with below average temperatures predominant.

UK Outlook for Sunday 13 Nov 2016 to Tuesday 22 Nov 2016:

There is a considerable amount of uncertainty in the forecast at this stage. However, frontal rain will be moving south-eastwards across Scotland and Northern England during Sunday, with the southeast staying dry. Meanwhile, cloud and showery rain will move south-eastwards during Monday. Rather windy in the northwest. Rain will clear away from the southeast on Tuesday, with a mixture of sunshine and scattered showers following on behind from the northwest, with the showers turning wintry over northern hills. Staying unsettled thereafter, with wet and windy weather confined to the northwest. Drier and brighter towards the south and east, but feeling cold with frost and fog overnight. Temperatures will generally be around the average, but possibly mild at times, particularly in the northwest.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 23 Nov 2016 to Wednesday 7 Dec 2016:

The forecast for the end of November into early December remains very uncertain. We may continue to see the unsettled weather affecting northern and western parts of the UK, with spells of wet and windy weather, with severe gales possible. Drier, brighter and colder elsewhere, with frost and fog by night. However, there is still a signal through this period for a more 'blocked' pattern to dominate, with colder, drier conditions more likely to dominate, with unsettled weather and very strong winds, which is usual for this time of year, looking less likely to occur.

UK Outlook for Monday 14 Nov 2016 to Wednesday 23 Nov 2016:

Outbreaks of rain and strong winds will affect Scotland and Northern Ireland at the start of this period, with the risk of gales over exposed parts of the north. This will slowly spread south-eastwards across the country, however there is some uncertainty as to how far south the rain will reach, with some southern parts of England and Wales staying mostly dry. Thereafter, staying unsettled with the heaviest rain and strongest winds most likely in the north-west, and any longer spells of drier and brighter weather in the south and east. Briefly milder at the start of this period, before temperatures return closer to average, with colder interludes leading to the risk of snow in the north, mainly over higher ground but occasionally to lower levels.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 15 Nov 2016 to Thursday 24 Nov 2016:

Outbreaks of rain and strong winds will affect Scotland and Northern Ireland at the start of this period, with the risk of gales in the north-west. This will spread south-eastwards across the country, although likely quite slowly and perhaps decaying as it does so, with some southern parts of England and Wales staying mostly dry, and perhaps quite cold. UK Outlook for Friday 25 Nov 2016 to Friday 9 Dec 2016:

As we head into the end of November and early December, the forecast remains very uncertain across the UK. However, indications suggest a continuation of the unsettled weather at first, particularly across the north-west, with spells of wet and windy weather and a risk of severe gales. Thereafter, there is a signal for colder, drier and more settled conditions developing from late November into early December, leading to an increased risk of frost and fog, and fewer incidences of strong winds or gales than would be expected at this time of year.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 16 Nov 2016 to Friday 25 Nov 2016:

Rain in the south east will clear during Wednesday. Outbreaks of rain and strong winds will affect Scotland and Northern Ireland, with the risk of gales in the north-west. These will spread slowly south-eastwards across the country over the following few days, though some southern parts of England and Wales will stay mostly dry, and perhaps quite cold. In the following week, it will stay unsettled with the heaviest rain and strongest winds most likely in the north-west, and any longer spells of drier and brighter weather in the south and east. It will be briefly milder at the start of the period, before temperatures return closer to average, with colder interludes leading to a risk of snow in the north, mainly over higher ground but occasionally to lower levels.

UK Outlook for Thursday 17 Nov 2016 to Saturday 26 Nov 2016:

Thursday and Friday are likely to be very windy with showers, which will be frequent and sometimes heavy in the north and west, perhaps accompanied by hail and thunder. It will be significantly cooler for all of us than in the preceding days and the showers will turn to snow at time on hills in the north. Next weekend and in the following week, it will stay unsettled with the heaviest rain and strongest winds most likely in the north-west, and any longer spells of drier and brighter weather in the south and east. The colder temperatures will lead to a risk of more snow in the north, mainly over higher ground but occasionally to lower levels.

UK Outlook for Friday 18 Nov 2016 to Sunday 27 Nov 2016:

Friday and Saturday are likely to have sunshine and showers, which will be frequent and sometimes heavy in the north and west, perhaps accompanied by hail and thunder, but the winds will ease. It'll be significantly colder for all of us than earlier in the week, with overnight frost likely, and the showers will turn to snow at times on hills in the north. Into the following week, it will stay unsettled with the heaviest rain and strongest winds most likely in the south, where milder spells are likely, and any longer spells of drier and brighter weather will be in the north. It may turn generally more settled later in the period but colder temperatures will lead to a risk of more snow in the north.

UK Outlook for Monday 28 Nov 2016 to Monday 12 Dec 2016:

There is considerable uncertainty for this period. The strongest signal however is for a continuation of unsettled weather in the south, with drier and more settled conditions in the north. Further spells of rain are therefore more likely in the south, with the risk of snow on the leading edge of any rain bands. Further settled weather is probable across the north as we start December and this regime may spread further south too. It will be rather cold for most though, especially in the north, where there will be an increased likelihood of frost and fog.

UK Outlook for Sunday 20 Nov 2016 to Tuesday 29 Nov 2016:

Unsettled at first with showers or longer spells of rain, turning heavy at times, with snow possible, mainly on the hills and mountains in the north. It'll be windy too, especially across the south where severe gales are possible in exposed areas. It'll be cold in the north, and although the south will be milder, it'll feel chilly outside in the wind and rain. Into the rest of the week, it will stay unsettled. The heaviest rain and strongest winds are most likely to be in the south, with some milder spells. Any longer spells of drier and brighter weather are more likely to be in the north. It may turn generally more settled later in the period but colder temperatures will maintain a risk of snow in the north.

UK Outlook for Monday 21 Nov 2016 to Wednesday 30 Nov 2016:

Unsettled at first with showers or longer spells of rain, turning heavy at times with snow possible, mainly on the hills and mountains in the north. It'll be cold in the north with night frosts likely, and although the south will be milder, it'll feel chilly in the wind and rain. Into the rest of the week, it will likely become more settled, especially in the north, becoming often dry and bright although cold with night frosts. Further south there is a greater risk of rain and stronger winds, and likely cold with occasional milder periods. Heading towards the end of the month, things become very uncertain, although the favoured scenario is for a continuation of more settled conditions with only brief unsettled interludes.

Eh? "Fairly cold for most" - how is that anything like last December which was about 5c above average? And "settled weather across the north" - go and tell those in Cumbria how settled last December was!
