Met forecast appears to suggest the current high will ridge northwards again out of France and probably settle into a very similiar location it is now, which would mean cold dry frosty weather.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 7 Dec 2016 to Friday 16 Dec 2016:

On Wednesday, wet and windy weather will arrive in Northern Ireland, western Scotland, north-west England and North Wales and gradually spread further south and east. As it does so, the wind and rain will gradually ease so the south-east may well stay dry during Wednesday. The wet weather is likely to edge further southwards at times so there is likely to be a spell of wetter and breezier weather even in the south-east for a time. It will become significantly milder across the country with much less frost than recently. Into the next week, this milder, wetter and windier theme is likely to continue, but in general, winds will be stronger and rain will be heavier in the north-west, whereas the south-east will stay drier and quieter.

UK Outlook for Saturday 17 Dec 2016 to Saturday 31 Dec 2016:

After a milder, rather unsettled interlude in the middle of the month especially in the north, more settled weather may return as high pressure builds in for the second half of December, and re-establishes more widely across the UK. However, this build of pressure is quite uncertain. If it happens, it would bring drier than average conditions again for most areas with lighter winds and an increased risk of local frost and fog, especially where skies remain clear overnight. On balance, unsettled spells look slightly less likely and temperatures will probably be generally colder than average.

Yes, it would seem hopes are fading for a cold December now.  Still time for things to change though.

UK Outlook for Thursday 8 Dec 2016 to Saturday 17 Dec 2016:

It will be windy on Thursday, though southern and eastern parts will see a mostly dry day with some brightness later. However, further heavy rain will spread into northern and western counties later in the day, extending across most of the UK through Friday. South-eastern parts are likely to see only small amounts of rainfall but it will become significantly milder across the country with much less frost than recently. This milder, wetter and windier theme is likely to continue into the next week, but in general, the winds will be stronger and the rain will be heavier in the north-west of the UK, whereas south-eastern counties will stay drier and quieter on the whole. However, there are signs that it could perhaps become less unsettled later in the period.

UK Outlook for Sunday 18 Dec 2016 to Sunday 1 Jan 2017:

A rather changeable start to the period looks most likely with some spells of rain and strong winds interspersed with drier interludes. More settled weather may return as high pressure builds through the second half of December, and re-establishes more widely across the UK. However, this build of pressure is quite uncertain. If it happens, it would bring drier than average conditions again for most areas with lighter winds and an increased risk of local frost and fog, especially where skies remain clear overnight. UK Outlook for Friday 9 Dec 2016 to Sunday 18 Dec 2016:

After a bright start in the north/north-east on Friday, it is likely to turn cloudier as rain and strong winds spread from the west across all parts. The rain may linger in the south next Saturday but it should be drier and brighter in the north. There are then likely to be further periods of wet and windy weather through the following week. The most unsettled conditions are expected in the north-west with drier and brighter weather for southern and eastern areas. The somewhat changeable weather is then likely to be replaced by more settled conditions by the end of the period. Temperatures are also likely to return closer to normal for the middle of December, after something of a milder period.

UK Outlook for Monday 19 Dec 2016 to Monday 2 Jan 2017:

Whilst there is some uncertainty, it is most likely that high pressure is going to build through the second half of December, and so the weather should be more settled across the UK. If the pressure does build, then we can expect drier than average conditions for most areas with lighter winds. Temperatures are also then likely to be below average with an increased risk of frost and fog, especially where skies remain clear overnight. There is the potential for some more unsettled periods, but these look less likely.

UK Outlook for Saturday 10 Dec 2016 to Monday 19 Dec 2016:

It is likely to be cloudy with spells of rain across southern and south-eastern parts of the UK on Saturday. The rest of the UK should be brighter with blustery showers. During the rest of the weekend and into the following week, further periods of wet and windy weather are expected to move across the UK. The most unsettled conditions are likely across the north and west with drier and brighter weather for southern and eastern areas. By mid December there should be some longer, drier spells between the wet weather, with a gradual change to something a little more settled. It will also be fairly mild initially but temperatures are likely to return closer to normal, with an increasing risk of overnight frost.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 20 Dec 2016 to Tuesday 3 Jan 2017:

Whilst there is a good deal of uncertainty, it is most likely that high pressure is going to become more dominant through the end of December, and so the weather should be more settled across the UK. If the pressure does build, then we can expect drier than average conditions for most areas with lighter winds. Temperatures are also then likely to be below average with an increased risk of frost and fog, especially where skies remain clear overnight. As we head into the New Year there is the potential for the weather to become more unsettled again

So a temporary blocking high before more Atlantic weather returns...

The forecasts hold firm in their suggestion of anticyclonic conditions returning in time for christmas, before the atlantic perhaps rolls in come New Year. May well be a rinse and repeat of what we had late November, with high pressure anchoring itself over the country generating cold surface air, and by late December, temps locally could easily struggle to get above freezing, very similiar to what we had in 1992 perhaps. Fingers crossed the core of heights moves more to the N/ NE and we can drag in some colder uppers from the east to generate perhaps a bit of wintry precipitation potential.

Agreed! If a period of average temperatures constitutes a front loaded winter then what can I say.
