Well, this very dry year in the Midlands is almost certainly not going to beat 1921.

Coventry is now just a few mm short of the the 443mm total which fell that year.

Thanks to TM for extracting the following figures from the edition of British Rainfall for that year.

In 1921 the Coventry area was rather wetter than along the Avon valley. The 3 Coventry gauges had annual totals of 441, 443 and 472mm respectively. Meanwhile at Rugby, 2011 is already wetter than 1921; my parents have recorded just over 400mm to date, while in 1921 the 2 town gauges received just 363mm and 374mm, and with similarly very low totals from Leamington Spa and Stratford upon Avon.

Meanwhile, 3 gauges in Evesham measured between 374 and 385mm.

Just failed to beat the record here then!

Here's the final table for Warminster, Wiltshire. 2011 was comfortably the driest year since I began recording rainfall in 2005.

Jan = 65mm

Feb = 84mm

March = 43mm

April = 12.5mm

May = 51.5mm

June = 134.5mm

July = 97.5mm

August = 98mm

September = 60.5mm

October = 60mm

November = 59mm

December = 97mm

Total = 862.5mm

2012s total has got off to a decent start with heavy rain since midday!

The final total for 2011 was 351.0mm here which is comfortably the driest year ever. It was actually just 59.7% of the 1971-2000 average and probably drier than even 1921 (which was probably around 420mm in this area as TM mentioned a few pages back).

No single month recorded more than 52.8mm of rainfall and six months had less than 18mm. Both Spring and Autumn were the driest on record.

Another interesting statistic is that just 2 months out of the last 22 have been wetter than average.

2011 finished with 636.6mm of rain, so slightly below average. However that was because we managed a staggering 124mm in December alone!
