04/05 or 05/06. Average temperatures with any cold coming later on.

You can never be sure. Personally I think it will come under a catagory of it's own. December should be comparable to December 1999 and potential later on it could end up being like December 2000. Beyond that well it anything could happen and depend on how severe and prolonged the cold is after the new year we may see comparisons to 2008/2009 or even February 1986. But anything could happen after the New Year and I believe that this winter will be below average - the question is how much below the average. So January and February (and the winter) could end up being in a class on it's own and may be similar to 2008/2009 or some winters before 1988. But at the moment, part 1 of Winter 2011/2012 (or part 1 of December depending on how the month works out) is looking like December 1999 (depending on how much snow the north gets from those NWlys).

A colder version of the winter of 2006 (more similar to winter 1996).

Broadly speaking there are a lot of things to compare but In terms of when and how any potent cold arrives which is what most people on here are interested in i think 2008/2009 could be closest.

I think that we may see something close to 2008/2009 when we saw the end of the winter produce the goods, after the previous 2 winters this year may well be subdued, hopefully not though!

Personally, I'd expect it to turn out more like 1977...I don't know why, though.

None of the above, but I'm leaning towards Gavin P 1955/56, All the background signals are very similar to that winter.

How did that one pan out? I can see it was classified as cold but what about snow cover?

It was all about February with a big freeze.

None but I like 86/87.

Oh yes please, that will do for me, nearly 2 weeks of school and over a foot of snow in the midlands, it was up to my chest with drifts.

we already had 8 inches when this forecast was issued, probably more severe than feb 1991 but because i was older and had waited for 4 years for proper snow again 1991 probably was more memorable - only just though.

In terms of cold, I would probably go for something along the lines of Winter 2008/09 - just below average with some fairly potent cold spells mixed with some milder interludes. I also have a feeling we'll have a cold first half to February, similar to February 2009, with outbreaks of snow and snows showers from time to time.

In 2nd place its 2010/2011. I assume all those who voted for that have misread the title.

Similar to 1683/4 just delayed by a 2 weeks and hence the December somewhat milder,

December Starts with strong Polar incursions with upgrades

The the Greenland high will start to build

Could be wrong of course

I've been thinking and December for me has followed almost the exact same pattern as December 1998, so if the rest of this winter followed then it would be a poor one...

I'm hoping now we see a winter similar to 85/86, with deep cold arriving at the end of this month and clutching the whole of February!

Probably not going to happen though!

I'm thinking along similar lines but have been noticing more similarities with the following winter (1999/2000), with a fair amount of cold zonality in December and now a suggested Atlantic ridge as we head through January. It's just as well for snow lovers that pattern matching is of limited value, as most parts had even less snow during January/February 2000 than during January/February 1999- other than on 16 February 2000 we were restricted only to very localised snowfalls.
