Just looked at the GFS precipitation charts and they seem to show an area of snow moving across all of the far north of England on Tuesday courtesy of a trough. Interesting, but we'll see if this is backed up by any other models.

Am I too far south on that GFS one or in it?

A lot of it depends on timing, the length of it is dependent on whether the colder air undercuts the warmer air also.

Your in the prime position as the current models stand though, purely down to the fact that you hold onto the colder air.

And yes, I'm on FB. http://www.facebook....yorksforecaster

Okay mate and added :)

My experience of marginal easterlies is that the temperature falls to 0°C during clear spells and rises to 2-3°C when a shower comes along. Sometimes, the temperature actually falls back down to 0°C during the shower if its heavy enough.

Opposite here!

Strong wind upping the temperature during clear spells.

Currently heavy pea sized hail and grauple falling. Down to 2.9C! :yahoo:

Covering on most surfaces :D

Some areas in Lyme Park had about that, but that maybe due to drifting.

We had 1/2 meter drifts in the town center here last year. With higher drifts (some covering farm walls) around the tops which themselves completely shut off the C&F Pass and trunk roads in/out of Buxton for a time. I got family residing in Lyme Park and remember well the transition it went from even the Macclesfield Canal where the snow depths were manageable, to heights even tractors struggled in locally.

Speaking of which your weather station was just picking up 7c for a second there for some reason, it's gone now though. :D

heehee sleet falling here now :) - although looking at the radar when this short shower passes it looks like a few hours of non-activity.

Not very exciting here Im affraid, its always the same when the wind is from the west or north west. Cold though, around 2 degrees at the minute isn't to be sniffed at going by the past month. The chances of snow here must be very small but I fell places further west towards the Pennines should do ok tonight and during tomorrow. Good luck everyone.

Dew points still slightly too high across most of NW England, with 1C being quite general and 2C along the coastal fringes.

Most of Yorkshire and the NE have sub-zero dew points however.

I can't remember what date it was last year, but a similar setup over a 48hr period is what gave the Pennines up to a meter accumulation over the tops from a Mersey-Estuary streamer. It was eerily similar to tonight's setup with just a line of convection which never stopped flowing, and pulses of heavier falls occasionally.

Obviously air temps are milder with it only being early December, but if the same setup happens again in Jan/Feb then today is a early testdrive.

That was Sheffield area and Peak district area, we had snow in the south pennines but not a metre.

Light sleet here in south stoke. reports of some flakes in north stoke

The steering winds are ideal for the Stoke area tonight, especially north Stoke...Heavy wintry showers pushing through Merseyside are making a beeline straight for you

Snow on the Flash village webcam & just evident on the Buxton cam aswell. Sleeting here, but no doubt the tops will be white by the morning. http://www.privateca...flashbarcam.jpg

There is a covering of snow just outside buxton and on the way up to the cat & fiddle inn where there was snow on the road earlier i suspect there has been further dustings since i left the cat and fiddle about half 5ish there is also snow at the top of winnats pass.

Yep, always happens here in such set ups, its quite suprising to see the difference a few miles can make

guys in oldham ashton area unless that wind changes its a non event showers to the south and to the north .

stop press just had a shower and its sleet/ wet snow but not a cat in hells chance of a covering out of this.

Its interesting because the NAE/ECM/NMM all put the focus on that area you mention. What will probably happen is the wind direction changes and the showers that currently being funneled to the south/north actually end up coming over the area when the air is actually cold enough to support settling snow. Still not quite there yet according to the models....
