I notice Aviemore has a good covering of snow now despite temperatures well above freezing between the showers.

Heavy sleet now in Newcastle.

Heavy wet snow as the shower clears away.

EDIT: was still pretty sleety, sunny now.

Later on the winds will become more NNW, that should leave us fairly dry and cold tonight.

3°C here during the shower, back to 4°C now. It was 7°C as the shower hit.

I see Teesside is having a heatwave as usual!

Had a squally shower at Cleadon which surprisingly fell as sleet/snow despite a starting temperature of 8.1C- there must be a pretty strong thermal contrast between the surface and upper atmosphere, more reminiscent of what we'd often see in an April northerly.

Are you sure? Isn't that the area around the Spinney Flats, not far from me at all?

Another very squally wet snow shower here, hopefully as the sun disappears later it may start to lay on the ground, but the showers are passing through very quick I must say. A pleasant surprise though to say the least.

Nice to at least see some snow falling from the sky at times in the heavier showers, which is more than i thought

we would get.

Colder upper air pushing down quite rapidly now

Even colder by tomorrow

Anyone fancy a trip to a north sea oil platform? :D

Light snow shower here at the moment.

That sleet/snow shower, while notable, may well be it for Cleadon- very little across Cumbria and Northumberland on the radar now.

Nothing much on the radar at the moment, but we should start to see a few more showers again for a time tonight before they completely die away.

Temperatures could reach 13°C tomorrow in our region, and maybe 15°C on Thursday - very mild! Very nice too if its sunny, but I have a feeling it'll be one of those gloomy spells which nobody really likes.

I could do with a quick blast of 35°C tbh to get rid of the SAD, obviously that's not going to happen here though! I love the feel of a 25°C dewpoint as well. Anyway I'm rambling away here... :lazy:

The period 9th-13th February 1998 brought four days of cloudy and windy weather to Cleadon but on the 13th the sun emerged and the Tyneside area had an exceptionally warm (17C), sunny, almost summer-like day.

Dull weather is almost guaranteed during the next two days but I think we're in with a shot of a 13th Feb '98 repeat this coming Thursday, it all depends on how many holes can be punched in the cloud sheet. One factor which is a problem is that the Euro high is set to be a bit further south than it was around 13 February 1998, with a more pronounced west to south-westerly flow covering us on its northern flank- thus it probably won't be wall-to-wall sunshine, but sunny intervals are possible.

In Cumbria the synoptic differences relative to the February 1998 setup will almost certainly ensure an overcast and damp day on Thursday, however.

Well, today has been a nice surprise! Loads more sunshine than I expected although it has turned milky at times, and the temperature is 14°C in my back garden. I expect a max of 15-16°C. Obviously its a bit of a sun trap, but even Albemarle is reporting 12°C, so they might record 13°C or so this afternoon. :D

St Bees is recording 7°C, showing how important the foehn effect is!

It was positively pleasant in Newcastle City Centre today, spring like! Thursday could be brilliant if the sun decides to show its face again :)

Indeed! Albemarle reached 12.3°C this afternoon so if there was an official Met Office station in Newcastle it would probably have been 14°C. If its sunny on Thursday we should be a couple of degrees warmer than today. It briefly reached 15°C in my back garden today, but that's a very sheltered location.
