Temperatures expected to plummet tonight and tomorrow.

Will be interesting to see whether any records are broken.

How low can we go...

Currently 5.c and dropping.

Wrapped up nice and warm (see below)

Can't see the records going for May but a very cold one for rural inland areas.

Currently 4.2c here.

Still mostly cloudy here with cloud moving in from the NW but it looks clear to the north east so hopefully it will clear soon..

Yes, it could be "Cidergeddon" down in the orchard if the blossom cops it.

Currently 4.6C here after dropping quickly, at this rate I think we may have an air frost by dawn, I wonder if it will be lower than the -0.8C we had on the 12th May 2010?

I don't want any major damage to spring plant growth/young tree leaves, though I'm not an expert on how frost-tolerant these will be. I can't remember any from May 2010 though.

Yes we are likely to fall down to at least 1 degree with a good chance of seeing zero. Sheltered parts of N Pennines could get down to -2 degrees, a cold night for mid May, but nothing exceptional. Still it always surprises me how cold nights can get when we have such short nights..

Not expecting any records to be broken as there will be too much wind and we don't have a ridge over the country.

even though we have short nights, we still get about 9 hours where it is cold, it starts to cool down at about 9pm and it doesn't start warming up again till about 6am, so that is plenty of time for a frost to occur

The date record minimum here for 15th May in the last 32 years is 4.1C so theres a chance that could go tonight.

I think even a ground frost is unlikely though, as after a clear evening it has turned rather cloudy in the last couple of hours. The temperature is now 6.5C after dropping to 5.8C earlier. If it clears in the next few hours we might see 3-4C, which is still pretty cold for mid-May.

The min temp was 2.9C here in the end, which is the joint second coldest May night in the second half of the month in 32 years of records.

A min' of 2.2c here which is the lowest May 16th min' since 1996 and the second lowest in the last 35 years. Only a handful of occasions when the min' has been lower after the 15th of May.

i think my crops would be safer in january than in may, as they died last night

however the good news is last night could of been the last of the frosts so i will plant new seeds in again

no frost here tonight 7.4c

so frosts and cold weather do downgrade in spring as well as winter, a couple of days ago we were certain to have a frost tonight according to forecasts

Both cold and mild/warm weather downgrade all year round as it gets closer to the time. Its just that in winter its more noticeable. For example, if a forecast temperature of 15C becomes 13C the conditions on the ground will be similar and nobody will notice. However, if 0C and snow becomes 2C and rain/sleet, then its very noticeable.

No air frost here (it hasnt occured in May in 32 years), but we still dropped to 3.6C, which is notably cold for so late in the month.

.

I agree snowmen dont really care if its 15c or 13c as there not there.

0 or 2c its crucial its the difference between winters over or does this mean it will snow on christmas day.

No frost her but its been cold
