Yes I just heard thunder. Very distant over the wirrel but it was thunder. The sky's gone all funny as well.

Yes very manacing clouds to my W as well. Gone pitch black now.

Well, that system sailed west of me and went crazy. I have seen CBs and the skies to the west and south have looked potentially wet all evening. There are showers lined up south of me and a Met Office forecast of heavy (possibly thundery) rain later this evening but I wonder if it's another close shave for me today. I hope not :).

Seems to be a stream of showers moving S to N that are developing into storms as they touch the Liverpool Bay area, but are remaining just off the coast. Having said that, there is one that seems to be now touching the land around the Wirral.

Synopsis:

Large, elongated area of low pressure over the Atlantic beneath an upper trough. A warm, humid airmass is advected northwards across Britain ahead of the upper trough, while cool mid-levels are present over northern Britain.

Discussion:

... ATLANTIC OCEAN & CELTIC SEA ...

During the early hours of the morning, a swathe of several hundred J/kg CAPE will move northwards into southern Ireland from the Atlantic. With this, it is possible that a few thunderstorms will form offshore, and may move inland to Ireland during the daybreak hours, but will probably decay/weaken during the morning hours.

... SCOTLAND, NORTHERN IRELAND, IRELAND ...

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will form as up to 1000J/kg CAPE develops in response to diurnal heating. With jet developing aloft, 30kts DLS will allow storms to become fairly well organised, with the most widespread sferics coverage expected in the highlighted MDT areas.

Low-level convergence and slight LLS may allow a funnel or weak tornado to develop, while hail locally >2.0cm in diameter is possible in any stronger cells. Slight backing of the surface winds may also allow a low-topped supercell to form.

There was a symbol earlier in addition to a forecast of intense rain over here in the evening, they have changed it but it's been so borderline that I'm still considering it potentially valid. It's quite amusing to see a meridian-like line of heavy showers a hair's breadth to the west almost refusing to cross an invisible line due south from my house! Weather is a funny old thing.

Doubt nobody is in W Formby lol, they're right in the midst of it.

May be that it is too far away for thunder to be heard. At this time after the sun sets it is possible to see lightning from a fair distance away. Looks to me like most of the sferics are still out to sea. Quite a lot of strikes further out at sea but no radar returns in that area so can't be sure that the lightning detectors are giving accurate readings.
