I think it was really rather cold overnight. I'm 200m above sea level, 15m from the west coast, and south of Glasgow, and at 2030 last night, had a hail storm with hail the size of large Peas.

Here's the latest picture of how the snow cover is doing.

Red circles for were it could be doing better

Blue circle for not quite as well as it was.

I guess something had to give for us having snow in Scotland yesterday!

If i'm not mistaken, it would seem that the Ice pack has extended a wee bit towards Siberia.

I agree, I think it has a little.

Lets hope the thames contributes to the overall ice cover this winter!

S

Maybe the Clyde (which happend in 09/10 and 10/11 if im not mistaken. ) Seeing an icepack float down a river during a thaw is actually quite impressive.

Both those years, the River Ayr, which flows close to where I am (15 or so miles from its finish point) froze over for weeks. During the thaw, there were icebergs the size of small cars floating in the river.

You can also see the definite ice increase on the siberian side :) I know cryosphere today is apparently reporting a loss? but that clearly shows a gain :) you decide Lol!

Different dates, methods and measures.

Cryosphere today is a day behind (perhaps it should be renamed "cryosphere 2 days ago"), CT also measures "area" in an automated manner from a single satellite and is meant for historical comparisons, while IMS kinda uses "extent", but from numerous sources as well as a large human input for use in Arctic shipping.

So for day to day comparisons, it's best to use just one sourcePosted Image

Quite confusing working out which one is closest to the real situation Posted Image with so many different reports and sites to look at Posted Image Trouble is i think it's quite normal with the worry of ice free summers being reported, that us casual onlookers, would like to grab any hint of a refreeze in full flow shown on any particular site Posted Image Which is why it is up to you guys on here, with a bit more knowledge, to explain to us in an unbiased way as possible, so that we too, can learn to make our own minds up what is going on. :)

]For the Coldies fun and interest!

...Far eastern Siberian Town of Magadan UTC+12 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magadan has smashed through its 20th September low temp record with a -10c

It is in the snow on the NOAA snow and ice chart so the first double whammy hit of cold and snow I believe. Posted Image

I fear not, the city of Magadan got to -2°C a couple of days ago and -1.5C an hour ago, but it is also the name of the region and Talaya-in-Magadan was down to -13.2C an hour ago - http://www.ogimet.com/cgi-bin/gsynres?ind=25808〈=en&decoded=yes&ndays=2&ano=2012&mes=09&day=19&hora=22

Had to check this out because ogimet does have the Magadan synop report and airport UHMM metar at the same coordinates. Turns out that Magadan airport is 25 miles inland from the city which is right on the coast Posted Image

Yes it is fresh, a lot of people are gearing themselves up for winter but it's still only September, I'm not feeling it yet!

looking at the snow cover now compared to a years ago.

post-15601-0-47673500-1348187187_thumb.p Not a big difference

But nice to see Iceland still whiter than last year.

The difference in Ice cover is still substantial. It doesn't look like much, but I'm pretty sure it is in terms of numbers. I'm sure BFTP could conjure up some data for comparison.

Snow cover is probably about even.

Current ice cover as a percentage of previous years, based on NSIDC extent.
