A low coming up from South is just as likely to give as much Snow if not more than one coming down from north.

One coming from north will pick up warmer air off Atlantic and Irish sea.

One coming up from South will drag cold continental air from Europe.

Biggest Snowfall I've ever seen in March 1979 came from a system tracking up from France.

The biggest single snowfall I vividly remember was caused by an Atlantic low crashing into the cold air, Jan 1995. 40cm in a matter of hours.

Flash being the highest village in England at just over 1,500ft it's not much of a surprise. Looking down the Goyt here it's just low clouds hanging within the valley and has been more/less all day as the showers pass through. Looking to the north for the 850hpa sub-temperature lows.

1'C here and overcast, looks set the main theme throughout the night except for a period of perhaps notable precipitation early dawn, most likely snow at around 0'C. Snow flurries possible anytime.

Tomorrow itself looks a cracker of a day, no clouds in sight, hopefully.

Things start to wobble though beyond a rather cold Wednesday night.

Very light shower overhead currently, got no lamppost and my security light has blown so checked with the torch and it seems to be very light sleet. If we can get something heavy I reckon it'll be snow.

Ian Ferguson has now updated us on current situation i.e potential snow in the MOD thread. Would that be bad news for us in the NW?

No idea, he only mentions the South.

Am I right in saying January 1995 (40cm) melted the same day?

He mentions only the south, and says himself that they are struggling with it right now. All to play for.

If my memory serves correctly, it pretty much melted the next day.

Tried to convince myself that the latest little blob of precip that's going through as had a few sleety elements mixed in but it's no good... it's still rain. The radar does show a bit of sleet/snow over highest parts of peak district though. I guess that why the village of Flash looks very wintry tonight.

This is good, it seems the low is enhancing vorcity so that the north sea showers which would normally die inland are actually pepping up.

Has to be said, Friday is looking increasingly snowy for parts of us. Doubt anything will settle due to the heavy rain over Thursday and Thursday night, but the latest (18Z) GFS run progs central northern areas as seeing a fair bit

Not expecting any snow this evening despite favourable dewpoints and uppers- main reason being the lack of evaporative cooling, any precipitation looks a light affair for the Lake District and will dry out as it crosses the Pennines.

Tomorrow should be a lovely cold winters day here- temps will struggle to get much above freezing. High chance of a spell of heavy wet snow as the atlantic warm front moves into the cold air Thursday morning - if the the front takes longer to hit the region watch the cold uppers from the NW move down quickly and it could become quite a lengthy spell of snow for places with a bit of height.

As for tomorrow, eastern parts of Northumberland and County Durham away from the coast should see some heavy snow showers and the N York Moors look primed for quite a bit of snow.

This is very much a 'wintry' cold period.
