First real convective shower of the night is forming around Berwick - maybe a sprinkling in Newcastle around 12? I've seen it happen many times.

I see.

I'm lucky I'm slap bang in the middle ...

West and at Altitude. smile.png

You're saying the 'whole of NE/Yorkshire is in a rain shadow' ...

Do we in the NW not matter? blum.gif

Well no because the PPN is running from West to East.

South Easterly winds can be a stonker for the North, here is some PPN charts from the 18z GFS. Obvious caveats apply and an E/SE wind nowhere near nailed yet but as we get nearer i think it is worth thinking about thinking about things from a regional perspective, we dont want a Scandi high that s likely to sink after giving a few grains of graupel for the Extreme SE, we need the HP far enough North and with a strong pressure gradient.

Newcastle usually needs a direct NE'ly to get 30cm+, a la Jan/Nov 2010, whereas SE'lies tend to be cold with an inch or two of powder snow. I wonder if we'll get a NE blast this year... smile.png

Are we actually going to get anything tonight, whats the general consensus?, i have taken my eye off the ball for the short term worrying about the Easterly.

All depends on the cold pooling and the orientation and exact lattitude of the high as well, for Newcastle there iss no reason why a wind anywhere between N and SE should'nt deliver, however, SE winds can of course just deliver really boring weather and agree NEerlys have a better track record.

I don't think you should be worrying judging by today's rather wondrous 18z GFS blum.gif

Tonight though looks just overcast for us ... although certainly the possibility of light snow showers anytime from 3-7am ... this will be rather hit and miss though (as for the temperatures, unlike last Friday and last Sunday night, they should just about hold off to give us snow/sleet as apposed to rain.

Tomorrow itself looks a cracker regionwide, sunshine sunshine and sunshine ... tomorrow night looks mainly clear but precipitation arriving by Thursday mid morning

For really big falls, just give me a stalling front.

Temp dropping off nicely here down to 2.4 from 3.8 an hour ago. Dew point 0.7 850 temps dropping away also.

Need the sky to clear for abit before the next showers arrive so if they are snow they have a chance of laying

I am not sure i rate the NAE at all, its very inconsistent IMO, not just with output but also performance wrt individual cold spells, it seems really accurate and just when i put faith in it, it seems to let me down on the next occasions.

Maybe I should move East, north east getting snow and the south east getting snow.

Yep, it will be just like the models to go and flip back east again tommorow though, another 2-3 days solid modelling required yet before the corks can be popped but a very good day in all. hopefully in 10 or so days time we will be doing the honours for real, a 'proper' snow event allnighter.

More sleet here with the temperature on 1.0c. The bulk of the showers now seem to have passed to the south.

That wet snow earlier was my 4th snowfall this winter! The ground looks icy now, so any further snow should stick.

True, see what it shows in the next. 72hrs! Hopefully 2010 repeat in the terms of snow
