Shed loads of acorns on the ground in Cumbria.... Could this mean a harsh inter beckons...... :)

Have an oak tree near your house? Noticed the ground of your yard, driveway, or porch overrun with acorns? If so, folklore predicts that these same surfaces may be blanketed by snow this winter.

Not only the acorn, but its connoisseur--the squirrel--is also linked to winter weather. If squirrels are more active than usual, it's considered an indication that a severe winter is on its way. And its no wonder why. During the autumn and winter season, a squirrel's main task is gathering nuts and seeds for its storehouse, so if its efforts have noticeably increased, it could only mean he's preparing for the worst.

Squirrels gathering nuts in a flurry

I have heard this and always keep an eye on the squirrels. Have two pairs in our garden and in the last couple of days they have been going mental, even risking the patio (to the annoyance of cats). Another thing to check is how bushy their tails are!

Will cause snow to gather in a hurry.

I know when the cold comes when my skin turns incredibly pale, I'm quite fair and in the winter I'm worse from the promise of cold weather.

The Donegal Postman who forecasts from the traditional methods of the ancient Irish and has accurately forecast the last two summers and winters correctly has forecast a cold snowy winter for 2012 !

N.B I think that involves looking at nature not the head on his Guinness!

So he got that one wrong, then?

The mention of squirrels bushy tails reminded me of something i did noticed before the winter of 2010. We have a friendly little farm cat that we feed and I noticed 2 years ago how she was so much fluffier than normal. She wasn't particularly fluffy last winter. I shall keep an eye out on her fluffiness and shall give my winter forecast accordingly biggrin.png

This thread is funny.

You are right - it is! Though having spent the day yesterday, locating acorns (suspiciously none found), digging for moles and chasing rabbits to see how hairy their feet are, I think this topic should have the same gravitas as the Model thread! acute.gif

Well if you go by all of them,we in for a cracking winter!

There was no ice for geese to stand on,the wind was n/w,etc.

It struck me at lunchtime how late the leaves are turning colour this year:

If the mole digs its hole 2½ feet deep, expect severe weather; if two feet deep, not so severe; if one foot deep, a mild winter.

I'll be digging up the mole hills on my father in law's lawn tomorrow morning to check then!

have u found out yet?

He he I bottled out. My father in law would go mad if I put a shovel to his garden. Though next time I see mole hill on my own land I will be investigating and will report back!

I read this thread before I went to bed last night and ended up dreaming about mole hills.

Pickle the farm cat isn't looking particularly fluffy at the moment but i shall report to you all straight away if she fluffs up! 2010 she looked hilarious, a round fluffball on legs.
