I think it has stopped snowing here now.

After 6 hours of continual snowfall, we've only managed a level inch !

Not quite Boston, USA eh, lol.

Now to see if it's all safely gone by work time tomorrow.

B. :)

Temp up to 0.7C so that should be enough to prevent any more freezing rain. Rain band not far away and extra radar has it as freezing rain.

It's 0c with sleety rain here at the moment.

Neighbour has got stuck in the drifted lane with his Discovery, I wonder if it will drive out in the morning.

1.3C and rain in Sandhutton, quite a slow thaw outside, presumably slow because the temperature is only just above freezing, but the snow cover probably won't survive at >50% coverage to 9am tomorow.

If anyone's a little down about their snow melting just check out the ECM whistling.gif

Recm1922.gif

We can all but dream tease.gif

Just had a look at the charts...cracking ECM indeed. UKMO doesn't look bad either. And the GFS...well enough said...

But will it verify? Probably get something in the middle....again...

The second band arrived an hour ago, pure freezing rain, still -0.4 and only rising very slowly. Very nasty stuff, ice everywhere.

I was alright, as I took the train home, but the roads were terrible in the city centre, it was like traffic-ageddon with queues of buses and cars on The Headrow, Calverley Street, East Parade, and City Square leading from the railway station.

Same down here! The cold surface air is desperately clinging on -0.2C here and the second band has brought back the very odd icy rain which has left a solid sheet of ice on my front windows! It's starting to melt off now but i have given in and put the heating on!

The first band stayed almost entirely as snow with it turning just slightly sleety on the back edge for 5 minutes or so. This next band however is just rain and although the air temperature is above zero it is freezing as it hits colder surfaces like cars and the pavements. We managed around 1-2cm on the grass and a patchy cover on the pavements and roads so not great really despite hours of snowfall.

The rain collector on the Davis is also a big block of ice too, its showing 0.0mm for today so far.

Currently 1.3C and a dewpoint of 0.5C.

1c here. Pretty heavy rain. Still deep in places. Getting bare where the wind blew the powder snow. So strange to have powder, freezing rain and then heavy rain in 12hours. Another big snow event here today :)

All snow events post-2010 have involved drifting snow. Prior to 2010, I never saw drifting snow, or never noticed it. Some drifting snow will have probably occurred during some childhood snowfalls, but I won't have noticed it.

Absolutely hammering down. Surprisingly enough it's not all rain yet. Icy rain and hail rattling on the back door for the last half hour and still quite a few snowflakes blowing about. Lost snowcover on the road now but still a decent covering on the grass and rooftops.

Temp rising and now at 0.6C with dew point of 0.4C.

Well the cold air that has been hanging on like a one arm man hahging off the edge of a cliff with an itchy bottom has just let go. A sharp rise to a dizzy 3.8c

If we go by technical definition then how many days do we go without rain before it's officially a drought.

Multiple GFS runs have gone over a week now.

Well since it rained the other day for many it isn't a drought.

Surprised too see the snow has survived overnight but temps not as high as predicted and overnight rain mainly light perhaps no surprise then.

If we go by technical definition then how many days do we go without rain before it's officially a drought.

Multiple GFS runs have gone over a week now.

15 consecutive days with no rain ( no day recording more than 0.1 mm ) is a meteorological drought.

A 'dry spell' is 15 or more consecutive days. none of which records more than 0.9 mm.

A 'partial drought' is a period of at least 29 days when the average amount of rainfall per day during the period does not exceed 0.2 mm.

So, for instance, a period of 29 days during which the total rainfall was 5.8 mm would just qualify, a period of 32 days with 6.4 mm or less etc etc.
