Tuesdays warning has just been downgraded

During Monday afternoon and evening snow showers will merge to bring longer periods of snow across eastern Scotland and parts of northeast England with some significant accumulations likely in parts of the east especially. The snow will continue into Tuesday before slowly easing from the north during Tuesday afternoon and night. The public should be aware of the possibility of disruption to travel.

Affected areas

Northumberland only

Northumberland is now under an amber warning

Issued at: 1215 on Mon 18 Mar 2013

Valid from: 0500 on Tue 19 Mar 2013

Valid to: 1800 on Tue 19 Mar 2013

Overnight into Tuesday morning snowfalls will become persistent and occasionally heavier across much of eastern and some central parts of Scotland. These snowfalls will last through Tuesday afternoon before easing by mid-evening. Strong to gale force easterly winds will drift the snow, especially over upland areas above 150 metres where blizzard conditions are expected. Some transport disruption is expected and possibly to power supplies. Over upland parts of the east 15 to 25cm of snow could accumulate during daylight hours Tuesday. The public should be prepared for the possibility of disruption to travel.

The rest of North east England is warning free

Well we've had a little snow falling for the past half an hour, nothing that is intense enough to settle but snow nontheless.

Moderate snowfall here now with a decent dusting. Yellow warning for today-tomorrow now down into county durham. Boundary seems to be wearvalley in durham. Here's a line from the mets medium term outlook for this weekend “ In central and northern regions of the UK, snow is likely for a time this weekend, with a risk of blizzards in strong easterly winds.“ More fun and games next weekend.

Latest BBC weather from the new look HD studios is showing most of the region from Durham south wards should get away with a dry but cloudy and raw day tomorrow (northumberland looks the hot spot for snow), Wednesday looks the same with the odd snow showers but very hit and miss a cold start but sunny Thursday as a weak ridge of high pressure moves over then Friday a deep low sweeps in towards the SW giving the possibility of some snow but where is uncertain at this stage

Still snowing here and bigger flakes now but not settling.

If this kees/peps up after sunset we may well see a covering overnight.

The wind incidentally is biting.

Tell you what light snow this afternoon means if that big blob of heavy stuff hits tonight could be a few surprises...

Things could get very interesting if the ppn in the north sea falls as snow (currently snow in Washington). What are the temps and dps forecast to do tonight? Will the wind pick up and push warmer air over the coastal region?

Looking like the band in the north sea is a little further south that was expected, could bring more of the region into play tonight.

Also just had some light precip falling as grupel/hail which is supprising as uppers are only -5 usally rain on the coast with them uppers. Must be to do with the thickness which is 522.

I wouldn't hold much hope for the weekend the milder air is shown to push in quite quickly a spell of transient snow is likely on Friday

On and off snow, lovely yellow clouds up to the north east and the radar holds promise.

Just had a laugh reading today's page, everyone writing 'snow falling' etc and being positive while Gavin as usual, looks out onto a different world warning that warnings downgraded only Northumberland now, weekend poor!!
