Fridays temperature for darlo has gone down to 1c now but sleet is still forecast for the bulk of the day I would have though snow would fall with those sort of temperatures? http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/darlington#?tab=fiveDay&fcTime=1363910400

Looks like the front on Friday won't even make it to Leeds let alone here!... however... what do people make of the chances of some hefty convection on Friday?

That was how the east coast got a decent fall back in January. Not sure if the air feed is as cold this time? But the SSTs must be colder.

If that's the case then you could very well be right.

Would there not be too much cloud for convection to form and besides, thicknesses and uppers don't look low enough in my eyes?

At this time of year, we really should be looking for Northerlies for convective snowfall and they can still deliver to some extent for sure.

In terms of snowfall tonight, the air is forecast to get a touch colder but not all that much colder so any PPN could turn to snow but I'm a bit skeptical we will see much in the way of lying snow, especially at lower levels.

All in all as I said a few days ago, I have not been looking forward to this week weatherwise because the easterly just started to look more and more sorry for itself in terms of how flabby the whole set up looks hence the cold air will not make it as far South and West as first predicted.

How different two forcasts can be in 2 hours. 10 o'clock news showed snow over us tonight and into the morning. 12 o'clock news. Nothing!

looks like showers today, possibly wet snow on low levels if the ppn is heavy enough, dying out later this evening. Another cold miserable day.
