I have looked at the temperature trend since 1950"s we had a cooling period from 1951 to 1979 we had a warming period from 1979 to 2001 and from 2001 to 2013 a cooling period, so in total 40 out of 62 yrs there has been a cooling trend. So if you back to 1941 you have got nearly 50yrs of of near negative trends and 22yrs of warming,so which is the norm and which is the rarity?http://www.woodfortrees.org/plot/hadcrut4gl/from:1941/to:1979/trend/plot/hadcrut4gl/from:1941/to:2013/plot/hadcrut4gl/from:1979/to:2001/trend/plot/hadcrut4gl/from:2001/to:2013/trend

I steer as wide a course, from the likes of Greenpeace et al, as I can, I...Them of the '64 million-year-old Earth'!Posted Image

Could you provide a link to Greenpeace theory of age of earth please Pete, thanks.

It was an old pamphlet, from sometime in the 1990's, Tony...So, probably not...

Archbishop James Ussher was a man of brilliance. Don't knock him until you have thoroughly researched him:

Astrogeophysicist Dr John Eddy, who was at the time Solar Astronomer at the High Altitude Observatory at Boulder, Colorado, made some revealing comments at a symposium in 1978, as reported in Geotimes, Vol. 23, September 1978, p. 18.

‘There is no evidence based solely on solar observations’, Eddy stated, ‘that the Sun is 4.5–5 x 109 years old. I suspect’, he said, ‘that the Sun is 4.5-billion years old. However, given some new and unexpected results to the contrary, and some time for frantic recalculation and theoretical readjustment, I suspect that we could live with Bishop Ussher’s value for the age of the Earth and Sun. I don’t think we have much in the way of observational evidence in astronomy to conflict with that.’

The main problem of course for the scientists armed with the data and drawing conclusions is this this old chestnut, more so now than ever in the digital age, "The best Argument against democracy (replace with Climate Change analysis) is a 5 minute conversation with the average voter.

I have a science background and I must say things are pretty hopeless in the marketing department for the IPCC when you consider coal and gas in China and the US, where rationality is not a strong point in the average voter, if indeed they have a vote. Not easy at all to have a proper understanding of the consequences and action needed. If the science is correct the main problems will be happening long after we are gone anyway, so "voters" here don't vote long term and never will. It's for most a question of "what's in it for me Jack" Looking back at the madness of WW1 100 years later, I can say what madness from this viewpoint in time, back then our equivalents wouldn't necessarily agree, one final push etc, but reasonable people could have prevented WW1, as Churchill for instance argues in his writings. The difference now in 2012 is that what we have done and continue to do will actually have a determined effect 100 years and more from now, whereas WW1 madness has little effect on us now, even if it was a terrible waste. So this all has to be taken very seriously at least. Important questions for sensible rational people.

but, unfortunately, adding up ages of Biblical personages is about as 'brilliant' as what most schoolchildren can achieve by the age of twelve...

Solar cycle24 the the smallest sunspot cycle since Cycle 14 http://t.co/uwfpTLBkSs.Does this mean we could be heading towards Daulton minimum or a maunder type minimum in the next few years. The solar maximum for cycle 24 was has just occurred and that was a hundred year low!
