The blocking for January to March have been on the CFS consistently for weeks now, while the blocking shown for December has been been decreasing. Best not to judge trends by looking at individual runs here and there.

Admittedly Gavin, there is no blocking being shown in the 'reliable' at present, but i would still rather be seeing regular occurring blocking winter charts that the CFS is showing than not seeing them, even if they are like u say 2+ months away. I think we all realize that at times long range models/forecasting is a bit of a mugs game, but like BFTV has said it has been very consistent in showing these blocked patterns and it has been most certainly a trend of recent weeks. Not even your mild self can deny that.

A period around mid-month in January has fairly repetitively of late showed blocking to our north on the CFS - maybe something to keep an eye on.

The best runs to look at for a "quick glimpse" of the CFS is surely the 10 day chunks, which have been pretty consistent for weeks in showing more mild areas than cold areas:

like this chart very much not for the below average temps for the UK but the fact SCANDANAVIA will be cooling down and hopefully start to see some good snow cover pile up over there
