Is it a case of the surrounding caldera rock is now so hot that there is plastic deformation and then slip? Not a good analogy but something like a sandcastle drying out and chunks falling off.

What do I know - I'm only the gardener :fool:

The Lava Keeps Getting Larger By Benedikt Jóhannesson September 28, 2014 10:38 Updated: September 28, 2014 10:56

holuhraun_volundur_jonsson.jpg?itok=fPKW

The eruption in mid September. Photo: Völundur Jónsson/Environmental Agency

The intensity of the volcano seems to be steady. A web cam shows the eruption from afar.

During the night, no significant changes were seen in earthquake activity. Last night, at 7.30 PM, an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred at the northern rim of the Bárðarbunga caldera. The largest earthquakes during the night were in the northeastern part of the caldera, between 3.4 and 4.2 in magnitude. All in all, 16 quakes have been detected in Bárðarbunga from midnight, most at the northern caldera rim. Only five earthquakes have been detected under Dyngjujökull, the largest of magnitude 2.0. According to web cameras the intensity of the eruption is unchanged.

The lava is now over 44 square kilometers (17 square miles). The extent as estimated yesterday, based on radar images and observations in the field; area measurements since 26.9.2014. Little changes on the northern edge 27.9 (dark red line), no new information on the southern edge yet. The total area 26.9 was about 44,2 square kilometers, thereof the main field is 43.8 but the southern one 0.37. Vents and/or craters are marked with red triangles, see the trail on the southwestern end. The area covered by lava grows by almost two square kilometers per day.

Yes, very shallow. I wonder. How it can keep producing those 5.2 earthquakes daily with no eruption

You do have to wonder.... I have a feeling this could just fizzle out, or it would take a +6/7 quake to really get things moving.

its certainly not slowing according to this above

the bit thats interesting is the big quakes today have not caused any drop of the caldera

in my eye if the volcano is taking that pressure with no drops the pressure on it must be very high

imagine catching a cricket ball without pulling you hands back when you catch it..

remember this situation could go on and on and on

or the caldera could collapse or it could just stop

although the latter looks the least likely

Evening peeps :)

what stunning viewing from cam 1 this evening, wished i was there(for piccies only)

the gps is taking a tumble after a snooze fest for much of the day, could we see another biggy(EQ) coming up,or will it rebound,as again we await

post-16960-0-08975300-1411935786_thumb.p

oh,also just caught up with other activities around the world, hope there isn't any more casualties in japan, saw the clip of them trapped in that ash decent(pyro thingy),WOW :shok:

and on a final note that i wanted to ask the more knowledgable folk on here, are these cams constantly recording on barda in case this thing blows.

Edit:strange light flickering to the right of the fisure,is it scientist's or a new eruption about to take place!

hi allseasons

it looks like the mo are behind on updating but are quicker with the slightly bigger quakes at bara

thats why i follow the graph

von.png

you know its happened but have to wait for it to be confirmed

the thing noticeable is the increase in quakes at bara (smaller but more)

Looking rather bleak and stormy there today.

... I'll try and post a screen grab once I've worked out why the editor will not let me paste one!.....

It looks to me that there may be some activity further up the dike where we had the minor eruption a couple of weeks back?  Possible steam, fumes but it could just be water interacting with the hot spot or pixilation on the cam.
