Hi jp does this mean that you think that something more akin to the Eyjafjallajökull eruption is possible ? Or could this one be a bigger boooom.?

hi mark

truthfully its a real tricky one to answer

if the magma has an eruption under the glacier that could cause a big problem with ash cloud and flooding

if the main volcano collapses on a flank that would likely be very explosive

my call is still a ne flank collapse but this is my opinion based on where the main bigger quakes have been

there is still a chance things change and this just stops

if you read the above this shows what the scientists think at present

The webcam looks phenomenal now! I guess it is the effect of the snowflakes in the sky get illuminated by the reflection of the lava!

I wonder if over the last 36hrs we are seeing a reduction in the overall number of quakes but an increase in those over 4 if so i wonder what this means?

we seem to have another drop going on the GPs at present perhaps as a result of last quake or precursor for another mag 4

Very High SO2 Pollution in Northeast Iceland By Páll Stefánsson October 01, 2014 12:17 Updated: October 01, 2014 12:21

holuhraun_eruption_pollution_graph_01101

A graph showing the SO2 pollution levels at Lake Mývatn today.Photo: The Environment Agency of Iceland.

Very high sulfur dioxide (SO2) pollution from the eruption in Holuhraun has been detected by Lake Mývatn in Northeast Iceland since late last night, with levels shooting up to as much as 6,000 μg/m3 at the Reykjahlíð school, measured by the Environment Agency of Iceland.

“Everyone may experience respiratory symptoms, especially individuals with underlying diseases,†the agency’s website, which is both in Icelandic and English, reads.

For those traveling in Iceland, it’s advisable to click on the different destinations on the map of Iceland on the agency’s website to observe the levels of SO2 pollution.

Today, Northeast Iceland from Bárðardalur in the west to Raufarhöfn in the east will be worst affected by the pollution. Out of inhabited places in North Iceland, Lake Mývatn lies closest to Holuhraun.

Looking at that video Gael force posted earlier,it seems to me that the eruption at Holuhraun doesn't look as big as before, now looking at the latest @

http://baering.github.io/

suggests to me that, that is the case, not much happening there post 16 hours ago(check last 16 hours),even 24 hours, only small swarms, most of the recent activity is under barda, now what i cannot fathem out is the continual drop in the caldara,if this fissure is slowing down then there should be a build in pressure at the caldara, maybe a new fissure eruption soon some where else ? and the magma finding a new route,i cannot see this at the moment,me too am baffled.

night all,got to get some sleep.

Updated information 1 October 2014 19:00 from geoscientist on duty

Seismic activity at Bárðarbunga and in the dyke intrusion during the last 12 hours has been similar to recent days. Stormy conditions causing noise on seismometers can still influence the detection of small earthquakes.

Since the last report at 07:00 this morning, around 10 earthquakes have been detected in the intrusion, all of them smaller than magnitude 1.5. Around 30 earthquakes were detected around the Bárðarbunga caldera, the strongest was magnitude 4.8 at 17:59 on the northern caldera rim. No earthquake larger than magnitude 5 has occurred since Monday 13:42.

Since midnight: Around 15 in the dyke, all smaller than M1.5. Around 40 around the caldera, strongest M4.6 at 02:44 and M4.8 at 17:59.

Volcanic activity at the eruption site in Holuhraun continues at same levels as in recent days.

You see the eruption from an angle you have never seen before. Photo: Eric Cheng

Here is a really unique set of videos of Holuhraun, made by drone photography. Eric Cheng, director of aerial imaging for drone maker DJI, joined our friend, Icelandic photographer Ragnar Th. Sigurðsson, for a last-minute trip to the eruption site in the Bárðarbunga volcanic system at Holuhraun.
