I have been searching for ages for a alternate vertical measurement of the caldera and only found 1,yes you gessed it,IMO :search::cray:

At least you've tried. :)

Going back to the weather for a bit. it seems that next week Iceland will be affected by strong northeasterly winds so the areas that have suffered from SO2 pollution so far, will get a respite.

Thanks Karyo

yes looking at the latest output, strong NE winds at that from tues onwards though not too cold(528 dam line not exceeding into iceland),maybe wintry on the tops, say where we are viewing the cams from.

still no check on the mag 2,two hours ago, maybe too late for verifiying @ IMO.though confused, the others after it are checked.

note also allot of swarms SW of barda, mmm!!!

2 October 2014 19:00 - from geoscientist on duty

Since midnight six earthquakes over 4 in size have been detected at Bárðarbunga but not any quakes between 3 and 4 in size. The largest were 4.8 at 00:36 and at 13:27; the first at the northern rim and the second at the southern rim.

Since midnight just over 40 earthquakes have been detected at the Bárðarbunga caldera. Only eight quakes have been detected in the northern part of the dike, all near or under 1 in size. A few quakes occurred at Herðubreið and Töglin.

According to web cameras, the eruption in Holuhraun is of similar intensity as recently.

Seismic activity has been prevalent in Öxarfjörðyour (Axarfjörðyour) bay off the northern coast of Iceland, about 5-10 km southwest of the village Kópasker. The largest was 3.3 at 09:03 this morning.

i think a bigger quake could happen again shortly looking at the tremor graphs

Stronger quake on the way - circa 10 mins ago.  3d Bulge just showing it as a mag 2 at the moment until verified.  I would suggest a possible 4.8?

I don't know about you, but to see that rock bubbling away like that is incredible.  I cannot conceive of the forces needed to produce it (the footage is better without the music IMO)

A question.

When this all started, there was a diagram about the flow from the main magma chamber under Barda that showed the picture below (from Volcanocafe with their attribution beneath)

post-9318-0-51700600-1412336066_thumb.jp

Image by Margaret E. Hartley/Thor Thordarson. Upper part shows a closed propagating dyke. The lower shows a rift open down to the mantle. The upper version draws its magma from a central volcano, the lower from the mantle. Upper alternative would give a smaller eruption than the lower.

Does anyone have any idea which sort of source is beneath the fissure eruption?

Also, if it is the top one, can it evolve to the bottom one by rock along the flow melting

Incredible. As someone who has played about with casting gold, silver, brass and aluminium on a small scale I can fully appreciate what the fumes and heat must be like from a seething mass of molten rock at 1100 - 1200C.

Parts of NE coastal Fife must have been exactly like that millions of years ago. To see geology in the making is beautiful, breathtaking and absolutely lethal!

No big earthquakes since 4an which is in contrast to the pattern of the previous days.

Edit: the IMO has updated with a M5.1 just after midday!

Hi NNW

I'm no expert and am happy to be corrected by others on here but my understanding is.......

I'm not sure that it is currently know with any certainty what kind of source the fissure/dike has but the assumption is that it is being fed from the barda magma source (hence the caldera subsidence).  The EQ's below the intrusion are very deep but this may be due to the magma forcing it's way down through historic weaknesses. I think brickfielder said that dike intrusions like this can start off as being fed from magma chambers but can end up being fed from the mantle.  If that happens then we are in laki territory and the signs would be the subsidence stopping but the fissure eruption continuing/increasing.

Hi guys,

Has any6thing happened to the cameras this pm?

Barb1 is just looking at an open view with no sign of the plume. The clouds are all moving rapidly from right to left and the sun is shining.

Barb2 just shows a scene apparently looking upwards towards the clouds which also can be plainly seen.

Has the eruption stopped in the dyke or have the cameras moved? or....

MIA

hi midland

its still going

cam 1 is the cloud from the fissure going right to left

cam 2 is close up but too much haze-cloud to see it with sun reflection

hopefully see better in a couple of hours. (assuming the weather holds)
