not bar 1 WSW

all have been north-north east

barc_gps_3d_is.png

bbgpseqmap.png

looking at the above

the ground is being displaced east to west and north east to south east

with the pressure of the quakes to the north east and the subsidence not so noticeable now

(except for the 4th with the mag 5 ). i still feel the north east flank is at risk of collapse

however this again are my own opinions and in theory this could just stop.

 mo update

6th October 2014 19:00 - from geoscientist on duty

Seismic activity in the dyke intrusion was low today, see today's map (and compare to a week ago). Since 07:00 this morning, only about 5 earthquakes have been detected there (less than 10 since midnight), all below magnitude 2. Storm conditions around Vatnajökull might affect the detection of the smallest earthquakes.

bbtodayman_20141006.png

Around 20 earthquakes have been detected around the Bárðarbunga caldera rim since the last report at 07:00 (ca. 30 since midnight). The strongest event was magnitude 5.1 at 11:04 on the northern caldera rim. Of these, seven events exceeded magnitude 3 (ten since midnight).

The visibility of the eruption at Holuhraun on the webcams was limited today. Scientists in the field, and the ranger in Dreki, have confirmed that it is continuing at comparable levels as during recent days.

that would be substantial, but i think that is not right and we should give it time to re-adjust.

Same thing happened at midnight the previous 2 nights. Some sort of scheduled instrument recalibration?

Fairly quiet overnight. Nothing too see on web cams due to the weather no doubt.

See there has been a mag 5.0 and a 4.0 overnight.

Also quite a few near surface smaller quakes which have not yet been shown on the GPS map yet.

The GPS signal seems to be trying to settle down after yesterday's evening outage but somehow it looks slightly different to me. It seems to be trying to rise a small amount.

What has caught my eye is the large drop in the GPS between 3 and 6am!

Just a quick note to say I think something a little different happened overnight. Bearing in mind the weather conditions are poor in the area of Bárðarbunga and there is ample reason to see false signals I still think something a little different happened.

post-2809-0-75819200-1412673342_thumb.pn

These measurements are a cooperation of the University of Iceland, the Icelandic Met Office, the Civil Protection department of the NCIP and the Icelandic Coastal Survey. They are accessed through the Icelandic Met Office web site at the following address.

http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/gps-measurements/bardarbunga/caldera/

It looks like there was a slight uplift and then a marked drop at Bárðarbunga. We have seen this a number of times before so at first glance nothing seems unusual. There has even been speculation that this bumping around is something to do with how the ice reacts in the caldera.

What strikes me as different is that this appears to be picked up on other SIL's. These are extracts from the full SIL charts.

post-2809-0-62213300-1412673681_thumb.jp post-2809-0-48962200-1412673701_thumb.jp

post-2809-0-93476400-1412673715_thumb.jp

The full charts are accesible at the university of Iceland site at the following link

http://jardvis.hi.is/gps_timaradir_vid_bardarbungu

This looks like a marked eastwards movement at vonaskard (VON SIL) with a smaller movement eastwards at  HAFS, while there appears to be a movement westward at DYNC. Bearing in mind weather conditions (blue lines on tremor charts tend to pick up) there does not seem like much evidence in a pick up in magma movement near the surface (red and green lines on the tremor charts).

A possible culprit is the following earthquake Monday Evening

06.10.2014    22:00:20    64.677    -17.410    4.0 km    3.8    99.0    6.9 km NE of Bárðarbunga.

To me this looks more like a slip fault earthquake on the ring fault. Something a little different from the normal even if it is not. I think this shows how the crust is being deformed and this might just be a relaxation in stress. I would not be surprised to see earthquake activity reduce a little now and for the eruption site to see a little spurt of activity through this morning.

As usual this is my interpretation and may well be wrong so make up your own minds.
