Good morning all (a record early for me)

Felt I had to let you know that  it is clear on the webcam this morning and the sight on Barb2 is incredible. The flames are reaching up to the clouds. It doesn't look to be reducing at all to me and the lava channel going to the north is currently showing very large with some flames.

Onto the GPS - no large ones shown overnight but a myriad of small shallow ones which have not yet made it to the charts.

The GPS is stuck again!

Hi Karyo, in your honest opinion, do you think all this volcanic activity will having any bearing on the NH winter this year? Or would there need to be a bigger sudden eruption to create an ash cloud for there to have any sufficient impact? When are the general thoughts on here, thank you

hi John, the continuous fissure eruption is producing a good amount of SO2 which can translate to higher levels of ozone levels in the atmosphere which in turn can encourage high latitude blocking and therefore increase our chances for a cold winter. But as the UK is just a dot in the northern hemisphere we still need luck to get on the right side of the block. I suggest you check the OPI thread which is much more linked with our winter prospects.

thanks for the reply karyo Yes been looking at the OPI thread and it makes for interesting read, a bit down beat recently (OPI going more Positive) however due to uncertainties in a relatively new theory. Think we may need to wait until the end of October on that one. Edited by John Badrick

Expedition to the Volcano Going Well (Photos) By Benedikt Jóhannesson October 11, 2014 21:31 Updated: October 11, 2014 21:34

myndavel_vid_hraunid_elisabetta_rosso.jp

Elisabetta's camera by the volcano. Photo: Elisabetta Rosso

The Iceland Review team left for the eruption early this morning with Páll Stefánsson, Iceland Review editor and photographer leading a group of four; journalist Zoë Robert and photographers Elisabetta Rosso from Italy and Louis Emile Robert from Australia.

geitur_ps.jpg?itok=JyN7Wk26

They landed in Akureyri shortly after 9 AM and bought some food and, of course, a gas mask for Elisabetta. That took a while, but everyone lent a helping hand, including a guy who overheard that they were looking for a gas mask and told them he had one at his store. On their way to the eruption site they encountered horses and goats (!).

Winter is arriving slowly in Iceland and the team drove in and out of snow. At 5:13 they passed Drekagil Canyon, which the guards and scientists use as camp.

About 40 minutes later (24.8 kilometers) the team was at the lava.

Elisabetta put together her drone and had it flying in less than half an hour.

The conditions by the volcano were nice but cold. The heat was about -3° Celsius, light wind and light snow. Excellent for photographing.

The team will stay at Drekagil for the night and return to the eruption site tomorrow morning at seven AM.

Lumpy bumpy today. Couple of quakes well above M4 (one 5.2). Couple of weaker (very) shallow quakes

Makes you wonder what all these quakes are doing to the caldera. Wonder what the total energy of all the quakes in the Caldera gas been to date

More activity in dike as well. An increase in the magma feed or a reduction who knows. GPS displacement seems to be broken so we don't know whether the caldera is still falling or rising even.

I am trying to forget about this as it is frustrating me!

Morning all

Plenty of smaller quakes through the night, but no medium to large ones.

Is it settling down or building up for something big?

I think the IMO is very late with the updates this morning as they haven't even listed the M4.7 that took place before midnight.
