Bárdarbunga volcano news & activity updates Bardarbunga volcano update: Eruption continues, increased earthquakes under caldera

Thursday Oct 16, 2014 16:42 PM | BY: T

LANDSAT 8 false colour image from NASA (15 Oct. 2014) can be helpful in distinguishing new advances. The lava outlines are from 12 Oct. (yellow lines) but a new lava stream has protruded southwards and the lava field has extended towards north (image: Institute of Earth Sciences)

The eruption continues from the Holuhraun fissure with an amazing lava output at approx. 350 cubic meters per second. A large lava pond has formed over the merged main craters on the central part of the fissure, from where a river of lava flows into the plain.

Earthquakes have increased under the Bardarbunga caldera, which could be a sign that something is about to change.

The Icelandic Met office' recent updates writes:

"During the last 24 hours, about 70 earthquakes have been detected at Bárðarbunga and a dozen in the northern part of the dike. This is somewhat less activity than 24 hours earlier. Two quakes over five in magnitude occurred at the northern caldera rim; an M5.4 at 11:16 yesterday and an M5.0 in the early hours of the morning, at 03:14 today. One earthquake M4.2 occurred later this morning, at 09:25, in a similar location.

Observations of deep thudding sounds were received yesterday while the large earthquake occurred, possibly as a consequence thereof. Scientist went to Askja yesterday but found no signs of a rockfall, which could have caused the noises. Possibly the sounds were from jet aircrafts, passing at the same time." (IMO)

15 Oct update

" there is an increase in the number of detected earthquakes in the Bárðarbunga area. Calm weather recently, resulting in better detection of small earthquakes, is hardly enough to explain this increase anymore and probably this increase is real.

During the last 24 hours, almost 130 earthquakes have been detected at Bárðabunga and about 30 in the northern part of the dike. No quakes above 5 in magnitude have been detected since 12 October, but five quakes yesterday were between 4.5 and 4.8. The eruption was clearly visible on webcams from midnight until almost 8 o‘clock this morning." (IMO)

Fairly quiet night nothing on the camera's and a reduction in quakes.

Yes,there must be a decent earthquake but the IMO takes its sweet time to update.

Hi GF

certainly acting strage today

what i am not sure on though is this drop on this graph(bottom right)!

post-16960-0-13826900-1413553855_thumb.g

is this a shift in magma?,also there seems to be a swarm under Tungnafellsjökull of late

http://baering.github.io/

maybe the magma is shifting in that direction, this is just my guess as i am not quiet sure

vid from yesterday @ the eruption site(holuhraun)

hi all, according to Jon Frimans last update there is an increased risk in Tungafellsjökull volcano. This volcano hasn't erupted in recorded history so God knows what kind of eruptions we are going to get (assuming it erupts at some point).

Yes, that's Jon's blog. It is not guaranteed that it will erupt but the chances have increased. He says that Barda is putting pressure to Tunga volcano. Interestingly, the fissure quakes have diminished as Tunga picked up.

i did say possible eruption in previous post^,so would we see the holuraun fisure die down then, becuase it still looked lively up to last time i saw the eruption(last night) on the cams

i just wanted to point out that i also mentioned some activity in the Tunga area 4 days ago (post #2057)

https://forum.netweather.tv/topic/81229-b%C3%A1r%C3%B0arbunga-and-askja-volcanic-activity/page-103

there has been more than 950 EQ's in that area in the last week

EQ not as big as i thought

That must be some king of interference. If it was an earthquake we would know by now.

Yes and away from the big deal, there was a 4.2 around that time and @ barda but that looks a lot bigger,an error maybe.

There have been some rock slides in that area following the big one in July.  Since it is on no other plot, I would imagine something very localised.

Lava Covers 60 Square Km, Scientists Reconsider Scenarios By Eygló Svala Arnarsdóttir October 17, 2014 10:48

eruption_holuhraun_lava_03.jpg?itok=4nYN

New lava at Holuhraun. Photo: Bernard Meric.

The lava which has flowed from the craters in Holuhraun now covers 60 square km (23 square miles). The eruption is ongoing, although the volcanic activity has decreased somewhat since it began in late August. Seismicity continues and sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas pollution remains a problem.

The earthquakes come in swarms, which often end with a large earthquake. The subsidence of the caldera of Bárðarbunga volcano, under Vatnajökull glacier, continues in connection with the seismic activity. Bárðarbunga feeds the Holuhraun eruption through an intrusive dike.

Kristín Jónsdóttir, director of the Icelandic Met Office’s natural hazard division, told mbl.is that scientists are considering whether movements in a circular crevasse in the icecap on top of the caldera is causing water to flow into it and encourage seismicity.

A group of scientists are using the time when the eruption is status quo to examine data more closely and re-estimate the situation. This may lead to an update of possible future scenarios. Current scenarios include a possible sub-glacial eruption.

Holuhraun lies north of Vatnajökull in the northeastern highlands, far from inhabited areas, but the SO2 emitted by the eruption is causing pollution around the country. Today and tomorrow, the gas is expected to mostly drift across West Iceland.

Roads leading to Holuhraun remain closed to the public and winter conditions will soon make the eruption site inaccessible to all. However, sightseeing flights are still running.

Click here to see pictures of the lava flow taken from the air yesterday.
