Latest from the scientific advisory board.

Seismic activity in Tungnafellsjokull glacier had decreased but activity in Bardarbunga is still strong.

From the geoscientist on duty

During the last 24 hours around 70 earthquakes have been detected around the Bárðarbunga caldera rim, the strongest was magnitude 5.3 at 08:36 this morning on the northern rim. The event was preceded by a magnitude 4.7 in the same area just two minutes before.

Not sure whether the time proximity there is important, although it was noticed.

Jon Frimann posted an interesting link on his blog today

This is a paper talking about one of the volcanoes to the south west of Bárðarbunga along the rift zone. I think it has some interesting possible insights into the what is happening at Bárðarbunga.

Some Quotes

High frequency earthquakes (due to fracturing) occur in the western part of the caldera down to 5 km depth. They are interpreted as being due to a water front encroaching upon and cooling an intrusive body or a magma chamber.

The gravity high is interpreted as a heavy rock mass in the roots of the caldera, i.e. basic intrusions which were emplaced at the neutral buoyancy level underneath the lighter rhyolite and basic residuals of crystal fractionation or partially melted crustal material.

This went on during development of the volcano and a thick plug of gabbroic rock formed in the roots of the volcano. It may have developed into a stem-like rock body thus causing the gravity high.

Worth a read even if you think each individual volcano is different (probably true).

Subsidence seems to have stalled a little bit at the caldera and while this might be significant it has happened before. It may be that the trend will continue given a little time.

There looks to be a little bit of an anomaly on the HAFS monitoring SIL at the moment which could be weather related but could be worth keeping an eye on.

Morning Barbadarians

Looked at overnight charts..

Nothing too much changing. Seems to be a trend of minor eq's at shallow levels, but there seems to be a trend to more still smallish eq's at deeper levels (9 - 15Kilmtrs).

Also strange is what appears to be 2 quakes between 05 and 06:00. One (the smaller) has made it to the charts at mag2.7, but the larger (looks at over m5,) has not. Perhaps it was weather related!

New Video, Lava Covers Two Thirds of Manhattan By Eygló Svala Arnarsdóttir October 22, 2014 09:25 Updated: October 22, 2014 09:25

eruption_aerial_video_omar_ragnarsson_sc

A screenshot from the video. Photo: Ómar Ragnarsson/RÚV.

Journalist and environmentalist Ómar Ragnarsson flew over Holuhraun last week and shot a new video of the eruption site, published on ruv.is. The video shows the expanse of the new lava field, which now covers 60.7 km2 (23.4 square miles).

Had the eruption occurred in New York City, the lava would now cover more than two thirds of Manhattan, which is 87.5 km2, or two thirds of the Danish capital Copenhagen, which is approximately the same size.

The footage also shows close-ups of the bubbling craters, a red-hot river of molten lava and the steam created when lava flows into glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum, which keeps retreating.
