It's a weak Polar Low, but could keep it's energy given the relatively high SST's available. As far as I know the upper air temperatures are -35C when this feature drops into the Irish sea, which is indeed enough, (albeit at it's very lowest limit) to qualify it as a true Polar Low.

Also don't forget whilst it might not immediately deliver snow to coastal locations, evaporative cooling will have a hand, especially as the cold air behind, digs in. This feature does have the potential to deliver a headline or two.

Not sure why there is so much excitement, only set to hit south merseyside, cheshire and north wales.

IT WILL COMPLETELY MISS THE BULK OF THE NW: LANCASHURE, CUMBRIA, GTR MANCHESTER ETC.

which would be a turn up for the books if this actually came off for south merseyside , west cheshire. usually but not always, these two areas are generally devoid of snow most winters, if you like the snow or your kids do, its probably the worst place to live in britain, it really is that bad here.  but when it does snow on occasion we can get a large dumping, but it does not make up for years devoid of anything. The last time we saw snow was 26 december, before that I cannot remember seeing anything since 2012 and even then it barely covered the ground lol, i have to go back to 2010 to remember the last time it snowed and was over 5cm, its been a very long time.

"Polar low" is one of those overused weather terms but this appears to be a genuine one. It's just a matter of whether it gets here or not.

The last polar low I can remember round here was in December 2000. We got a good dumping from that.

Very interesting.. I suspect that even by the coast, evaporative cooling will play a huge part.. only issue is with wind from the sea, after the snow had cleared through, there will be a rapid melt.

I wonder if the Met O warning will change because that is more a heavy band of snow now than showers

St. Helens and Newton are east merseyside. Warrington is north Cheshire, and Leigh/Irlam are west greater Manchester
