Seeing some fantastic forked lightning in the cell to my South and West in Ludlow direction - about 15-20 miles away.  Anyone in line should in be in for a treat.

If you look at my Nest cam live stream: https://video.nest.com/live/Atmiip, you can see the anvils of the thunderstorms over the otherside of the English Channel! :D

Is that them on the horizon above the hill? Been a good day for us down here as we usually get lots of crappy cloud blocking the view of anvils

That Shropshire / Worcs cell was surprisingly active when I posted half an hour ago - it would have been down over Cleobury Mortimer area I think.  It was great distant lightning considering it was still quite light then.  Looks like it's fizzled now!

Fresh sferic near Bewdley/Kidderminster now it seems. Thought I just caught a flash in the corner of my eye whilst working on my computer too but could have been something else.

Here on the Welsh Borders / Knighton/Ludlow area some really dark cloud bases are now moving up from Herefordshire.

Lightning to the east about an hour ago has now moved away. More cells to SW, Kington

Lightning now near Northampton. What's causing these cells to keep on going. DLS?

Is that what it is? I thought thats what helps elevated storms get going and destabilises a plume, but not sfc based conditions?

I am guessing here but I would say it is a mixture of wind convergence along with the last shreds of heat from the days heating. Now that the sun has gone down and the land is cooling I expect the showers and storms to decay, there are already signs of this with no lightning for about half an hour. I usually find that storms which have developed as a result of solar heating can hang on for a short while into the evening.

Just as I post that reply there are two more strikes between Banbury and Northampton. I still expect the showers to fade now though. It's a pity as they just didn't quite reach Derby today.

I would also say wind convergence is the factor in keeping these storms going with a pinch of mixed layer cape. Wind convergence is an alternative trigger to diurnal heating and even if the sun goes down winds can only go vertically if they collide. Any surfaced based storms will fizzle out.

I did think that myself today and wondered what would happen when night time arrived with storms triggered and sustained by converging winds.

my theory(correct me if i am wrong),that when a shower/storm developes in the heat(excuse the pun)of the day, causes moisture to rise into the lower atmosphere where the air is lighter and too is the gravity, think of all those tiny water vapours that rise and then collect together as they condence and come to a stop 40,000 km or more above our heads then freezes to create hail/heavy rain, these then get heavy enough to start to decend at a pace to the surface,it is this action that creates friction in the atmosphere to create lightning.

Hello peeps just had a couple of very close strikes about 20/30 mins ago out of nowhere (plus an earlier few rumbles earlier this afternoon) but can anyone explain to me why I saw blue light/flash coming through all the plug sockets would it just be from the Lightning striking pretty close?
