It's good that they are trying to protect the elderly but I'm not sure how effective the latest measures will be. I get the impression that many will carry on as normal going out shopping and to their activities. My elderly mother,89 years old is still quite active but has COPD and asthma. She seems to think it's 'just one of those things' that won't happen to her. No doubt she's not the only one!

But in this instance, it makes no difference what the government do surely?

Apologies, if already posted. The DCMO explains the reasons for not shutting down large gatherings and sports events from about 3:00 onwards. I hope she's right.

Well no one else apart  from chris widgie seems to think so.

Have a look at the market tickers emax, think that ship has sailed?

There's markets crashing, and then there's staff being layed off or out of work left right and centre. Its not entirely about the stock markets.

I am sorry to all those who love and care about sport but I don’t see the reason for such a need to gather together as a herd at any cost.

Oh yeh, definitely, world economies have taken a massive hit, and will cause problems for a fair while (which is annoying really, because the market crashes are not completely due to this virus). I'm just suggesting its still a fine line, and if you can help the economy as much as possible, for as long as possible, it all helps.

Just look at airlines for example. Many are now laying off hundreds or thousands of workers (a lot are contractors, mostly mechanics etc) because of the economic impacts)

Of course. I think its safe to say our record employment is probably going to be gone by the time June comes along, can sadly see alot of jobs being lost, at least on a temporary basis, so a lot of hardship to come for some I fear.

Also thanks Jo, makes sense!

The narrative being peddled is that the virus will peak in late May now as if that would have happened anyway.

This is a government decision to let that happen because of their actions . Not the other way round .

The public are being fed the May peak to reduce criticisms.

I was thinking that, all those channels and there won't be any live sport to cover at this rate for several months!

What we need to know also though is the age breakdown for those who are in a serious condition. I think again that does back up the logic of trying to gain herd theory, and just let it run its course through the working age population.

Let's hope our modelling is more of the ECM variety rather than the GFS.

That's quite a significant difference in the male to female ratio o_O  60% to 40% respectively, especially as Italy has a ratio of 0.93 male to female, aka there are more females than males in Italy.

New government advice includes;

If you have a cough or high temperature, however mild, stay at home and do not leave your house for 7 days from when your symptoms started

The ongoing annual seasonal FLUSURVEY have now added a Covid19 survey in this week, asking about peoples' perceptions and thoughts on govt advice and what you have been doing already.

www.flusurvey.net

They want more people to sign up. UK wide but run by Public Health England.

If they want to keep the school closures on review fine but to suggest they might need to be shut to the summer if they do bring them in seems to not be based on much logic or science .

It seems that this long term shutdown suggestion is being used to deflect from criticisms . So the narrative is , “well you know apparently these school closures only work if you do them for a long time that would cause far too much disruption “.

“So our hands are tied really .”

Exactly, they want people to stop wanting school closures.

Really uninspiring measures. We need strong leadership and decision making right now.

I mean alot of it is common sense to be fair, but I think its probably wise they are bringing out such features as not everyone is going to use that sort of common sense.

Boris: We've done what can be done to contain covid-19

WTF? What about the 100s or 1000s of flights that continued to come in from affected countries
