The radar has to be a hit for here this time, surely.

Hopefully but it’s typical that as soon as the showers start to hit land slightly further down the coast, the direction has veered into more of a SW/NE direction meaning that they are still not affecting any different parts of the region.

either that or Winter Hill thinks it’s part of the Andes and is stopping everything in its tracks.

3.5C and light rain, nothing interesting for tonight really, just wet.

The Winter in general, not the next few days.

The way the NH is at present & the forecasted SSW in the first part of Jan has the best ingredients in a long time to deliver a real Winter, a Winter of note.

That's what I mean, the cold air is much warmer than usual even in the Arctic regions. This will probably result in an SSW that is somewhat diluted in terms of effects. Also it might affect USA rather than us.. who knows. I'm sure we will get a cold winter though.

Precipitation still moving in a sw to ne direction. Never good for southern parts of the region. Until this changes it's going to be bone dry I'm afraid.

Looks fine to me. Loads of PPN coming in off the Irish Sea, moving over the Welsh hills with ease. Not like it matters though, it’s rain all the way.

Anyone in Burnley, Blackburn?

Yes, and fairly persistent snow now for the last two hours, a covering on all surfaces about 2cm now, temperature -0.1c.

Looks like you got your prediction (a couple of days ago) of the shower line completely right - great work Kasim .

Thank you. Some of the higher parts over 350m will be getting well over 15cm now.

Do we reckon it could end up 5-10cm at lower levels by tomorrow morning, or is it going to die off before that.

We had modest convection this morning, but conditions not conducive to snow, just a sleety cold rain. Since lunchtime, convection has been absent and its been dry. Pity we are not seeing much now as conditions are more conducive to snow, seems to be kicking off further south, shower alignment is perfect for here though - we shall see if we can squeeze a few showers before the frontal feature arrives.

Met office regional forecast is odd

Monday:

After a frosty start, any remnants of showers and wintry weather clear through the morning, leaving a largely dry day, but remaining cold. Showers developing overnight, heaviest in the south.

Where do they get that last part from?

Has anyone any idea why showers on a westerly often grow in intensity when the cross the Pennines but usually die a death when coming in from the other direction.

watching the radar, parts of the southern dales are getting hammered by something, either wet or white.

They're developing over the Irish sea but moving in the wrong direction. The ones that have passed over the Welsh hills (and there hasn't been many) don't have our name on them. Good for the N Midlands though.

Started doing something here but it’s only light and not sure whether it’s rain, sleet or snow.

Cracking news in the tweet thread too now regarding major SSW! Are we on the verge of an historic Winter, it certainly has all the ingredients! It has to happen again sometime.

Ramp of the week Day 10!

To be fair the roads don't seem to have been gritted properly round here, so if same there recipe for disaster.

How many people bother with winter tyres after all?

Indeed, I saw mention of the Thames freezing over  I would love some historic cold but they do set themselves up in that thread for disappointment. In the here and now, it looks like we might get our first precipitation of the day - surely to be rain as of yet but we've managed to dodge the showers.

I found it odd someone picked up on the Thames freezing over comment rather than sea freezing over one.

A wintry mess of rain, sleet and snow according to Manchester Airport Taf important to remember this is the forecast for the airfield I am sure areas above 200m will see snow if there is anything left on the front and if indeed the front effects our region.
