Snow levels back up to yesterday’s peak.  Some drifting at this level, but no huge drifts.  Power on.  Will be a lot more up at the Dog Norman’s you wouldn’t see him for all the snow.  Snow day no 2.

What a splendid sight this morning to wake up to 4-5 cm of lying even if wet snow which is huge (and sooo rare!!!) for my location. Indeed, the best result since the fabled BFTE on Dydd Dewi Sant in 2018 which was the only day in my memory with a max temp below freezing. Wonderful to see neighbours kids having fun, sliding down the field on their toboggan and there was even enough to build a sizeable snowman!😃🛷☃️

Question to the wise.

our oil fired heating (jet fired Rayburn cooker, hot water, heat combo thing) normally goes off at 7:30;pm as we are by log burner in living room for evening.  It comes on at 6:30 am and in this snow weather (apart from bits of sunshine time today) we’ve run it all day.  However as temps are supposed to drop down to -8-10c here during the night, should I program it to come on again for a few hours say, 12-3am?  It can’t be run by external thermostat and I’m not sure what 3 hours on a low heat would achieve.  Alternatively should we switch it back on when we go to bed, on a lower temperature for the whole night?  Conscious that our non- wall insulated slate built house could get shockingly cold by morning.  Any thoughts?

I would think that the latter option is probably the more efficient one but can't speak from experience as I'm one of the few dinosaurs who haven't progressed to any form of central heating yet, just one permanently heated room by courtesy of an 'ancient' (1950s) solid fuel Aga plus two downstairs rooms with log burners lit only when required.

Golly you must have a good woodsman, or be a good woodsman to be solid fuel only. Will go for low heat for about 4 hours when it’s at its coldest.  We don’t usually run heating for more than 2 hours morning and 2 hours night and our bedroom has no radiator so we are used to ‘cool’ but not overly thrilled with ‘Strewth it’s freezing’.

Twelve years ago we had the opportunity to buy a 5 acre plot of land on the Llyn, 17 miles from home. Very wet ground but ideally suited to planting fast growing trees like willow, alder, birch, poplar etc. The heavy clay retains the water even in our dry summers so can be left to 'do their own thing' until it's time to harvest. 🪚
