Boxing Day 60 years ago was the start of the infamous cold and snowy winter of 1962/3. I was having another look the other day at the 'Weatherwatch - The Great Freeze of 1963' programme on BBC4 and in particular the civilian staff trekking and stumbling single-file across the North Yorkshire moors from a snowed-in RAF Fylingdales to relative safety at Goathland railway station, a distance of some four miles. It is hard to imagine it now and I am sure the authorities  would have something to say if the road to and from Fylingdales was closed for any length of time. But that was 60 years ago when winters really were winters, something which I remember well from my grammar school days in Surrey!

well if it was london, even a deluge of rain would have caused disruption 😄

i have been to Fylingdales a few times in my MoD days,  was part of the design team that refurbished the air traffic control tower (ATC), lovely part of the country up there. in fact, i have worked at every RAF base in the UK and the best one i worked at was Linton-on-ouse. and farther away, the Falklands, where the penguins were  a nuisance i have to tell you 🙂

Alas poor snow we knew it well. Low pressure system not developed so the snowy idea has gone up the chimney.

Absolutely lashing down with rain here as I type.
Everywhere was already looking well sodden on my afternoon walk.

What a drab miserable and mild morning it is. No sign of anything wintry in the next ten days. Saying that one person's misery is another person's delight weather wise.

Well I mis-timed my dog walk this morning as the rain arrived an hour earlier than expected. Still, not to be deterred I donned my new waterproof winter coat I got for Christmas 😃. A lovely walk around the fields with deer crossing my path, buzzards low flying as they branch hop each time I get closer & a woodcock seen too. Rain was moderately heavy, a muddy walk but enjoyable.

HOWEVER, was I dry on my return in my waterproof coat? Was I hell 🤬. Something says waterproof to 5000mm means it should withstand moderate rain. I was only out for an hour. If you buy from a supposedly ‘specialist’ company you should expect better. Ok Mountain Warehouse isn’t top end but with the word ‘mountain’ in the name I should be able to buy something I can go up a mountain in extreme weather & stay warm & dry. I’m only walking up a chalk mound (I.e. wolds) in mild (6.6c) & moderate conditions! What is wrong with the design world nowadays? Can no one do a job right anymore?

Anyway, good morning/afternoon everyone 😏

Wet & wild out there today.  At 7c it belies the coldness of that wind, which is severe on the exposed hills - my face hurts! The full face balaclava I bought a few years ago is looking decidedly more attractive 🥷🏼😝

Oh, on a side note, came face to face with a stoat yesterday which is very rare! Knew something was there when one of the dogs tried sniffing it out and pouncing about in the grass (he never catches anything), then the stoat jumped out of the grass & up the hawthorn hedge, leaving a right stench scent, presumably to scare us off. My god, it was worse than fox scent! 😷

It is rather breezy round these parts this morning, i noticed how the wind is making it feel chilly on my 10 yard trip to the log store 😂😂

Was the waterproof failing to breathe or was it actually leaking? I tend to find most waterproofs don't breathe properly so in winter and cold autumn/spring days I wear fleece inside which helps. Never really found one that works well to be honest. The other annoyance they always need the water proofing re-applied regularly and unless it dry outside I haven't  anywhere to dry one out really bar the shower rail in the bathroom.

Another windy day here, 9c this afternoon, but wind made it feel colder. Less rain than I expected. Doing some carpentry in my workshop this afternoon, and realised the I have no 'small' wood accessible that will fit the small pot belly stove in there. Managed to scrap enough together to stay warm this afternoon but a major drop off as I think the only suitable bag is under 2 others behind log store. I may need to cut some. Looking unsettled for the weekend and colder next week.

Absolutely foul morning in Barnsley with rain pouring down.  Hear is clear evidence of how poor the Meto website automated forecasts are.  Rainfall radar clearly showing heavy rain for a couple more hours yet forecast is for dry and cloudy.

Rain has stopped at home but replaced by fog or low cloud. Quite cold at 6c this morning.

I think you’re right, it’s the breathability (although the rating is the same - 5000mm). Tried it again yesterday, rain was lighter but persistent & it was inside that was dampest. It’s a down coat which I think is just too warm (💦🐷🤭). I am going to put it through the wash though with some waterproofing stuff, but not til I get the heating fixed. Thanks for the advice 👍🏼

A glorious day out there today (can’t compare to yesterday as didn’t see much of it!)…..clear blue skies, sunshine, crisp under foot & a biting wind. Brilliant for blowing the cobwebs away. Was 2c when walking mid morning, about 4c now. Bring on the new year, I’m ready for it 😊
