I know it might seem a bit steady to you good folk North of the border and it is the car temp gauge, but this was a tad chilly on the Yorkshire Wolds on my teatime drive home tonight...

Just beautiful!! Always worth getting up high with a full view of the horizon before and after sunset. Folk tend to use ‘alpenglow’ to refer exclusively to the pink colour that comes when the rising/setting sun shines direct onto the surface, but it’s also used to refer to the effect similar to what you’ve posted….when you get those beautiful hues on the horizon opposite to the sun

This was here at Mar Lodge after sunset…but looking north.

Planning Outlook

Remaining very cold over coming days with terrain widely frozen and further areas of snow showers to come across northern areas, but many areas dry and sunny. From Sunday, an uncertain pattern change as low pressure pushes north. A period of snow or even refrozen rain as precipitation interacts with pre-exisiting cold, and very turbulent conditions too, before milder and wetter weather edges north. Much uncertainty as how far north, and how long, this milder interlude will last. Likely short-lived, with colder patterns favoured to return.

Nothing set in stone in their view!

That is cold. I’ve never recorded below -6c  in my time on the coast here in NE Fife. I think -5.3c was the lowest (in 2010). Last nights -4.0c was notable.

Stunning @Benvironment  great having the Braemar updates on here and also, cheers for enlightening (ahem) with the term ‘alpenglow’. This time of year is very kind for sunrise/sunset jaunts, no need to get up or get home at cr@p o’clock for them 

Any word on how Christmas Day is looking yet? Weather karma says it’ll prob be tropical, fe:kin’ club 18-30 Santa in Bermudas

A small occluded front that could bring some ppn to northerly parts over the next few hours. Incoming? Should I set an alarm for 04:00??  Nope. Let me sleep.

Oh dear. Kinbrace is reporting positive temps. Not good.

Looking at the more recent models runs the MWIS take on it looks as if it could be right, it could be a brief warm up then a return to cold. The synoptics overall aren't typical December at all, tropospheric vortex all but non existent. 

 

Currently -7.9C with a low of -9.4C around 2am. Should warm up a bit more today compared to yesterday, but likely will still stay sub zero. Not looking quite as extreme overnight for the rest of the week either.

As expected, temperatures overnight lower than the previous night. Temperatures on the commute this morning were noticeably colder than yesterday morning.  Driving past Sauchen -14c, while Westhill down to -11c. Aberdeen -7.5c

Two attempts to start the car this morning, so that's a first since 2014.

The weather is certainly not dull! These photos are taken of the burn in our garden 3 weeks apart! The silver birch is the same one!

We need to get Puffy's weather station up and running, I don't know what the temp is. Waiting for the new shed then it will be fixed on that. But it's definitely cauld! Shoved a moaning husband oot the back door with a jug of hot water for the birdbath, now got heating on to thaw him oot

A lad at work had the same problem starting his car this morning. Apparently diesel starts to freeze around -15c
