I'm expecting an update about 11:15 with the 6Z. With the last update you need another 10– 20 miles nudge south to stop you getting ice pellets and rain mix in the late afternoon, if there's any precip by then.

Cheers for that. That was my assumption too.

I think we just need a shift south to keep us in the cold and keep the precipitation over us too.  Weirdly the snow is dryer now than it was first thing this morning. Evaporative cooling must be lowering the temps.

Disappointment written all over this event isn’t there. Flakes are tiny now, lost all the intensity, still isn’t sticking properly. Temp on the rise. 1.1C

As we saw in January 2021, it can settle on unfrozen sodden ground no problem if the flakes become big and heavy enough. It can snow for hours and not stick and then suddenly they'll be a tipping point and from then on it's game on.

Quite surprised by that as it's sticking here in south liverpool.intensity drops off and it's small flakes then five minutes later we get a burst of heavier stuff

No snow here yet, i'll be so dissapointed if we dont see any snow considering the charts from a couple days ago, we havent had a covering in donkeys years, barely even a dusting.

Heavy sticking snow at 150m if you're in the Midlands, so hopefully conditions will transfer north and at lower elevations.

Yeah it’s coming down again now. Flakes are still tiny until more moisture is introduced later. But as that’s introduced, it becomes more marginal. Can’t see us getting more than a dusting on grass & other favourable surfaces. 200m+ event I think.

Everything white except roads and pavements, just as it was starting to stick on them the intensity has died down.

It’s actually proper snow in ormskirk now which is lovely to see falling, still only a bit of accumulation on grass though. Interesting to see how it all plays out throughout the day and into the night.

Clearly ground temperatures are an issue and with things set to become more marginal this afternoon then I can see why the Met are saying barely anything at lower levels, looks to be a good call so far.

Meanwhile here, we need something to fall to make the ground damp, the dry air is certainly making its presence felt.

That's true but we are facing an unseen factor that is never commented on. Infrared radiation. That's stronger in early March than in January and that does affect snow accumulations for early and late season snowfalls.

My lad is going to the Utd game tonight.  Whilst conditions might be ok to play there,  some supporters might have a challenge getting back to higher parts.

As long as this intensity keeps up there won't be any marginality at the surface at all all day. The only marginality is above 800 m south of Chester later in the afternoon. As temperatures increase in this layer towards 0 through the morning flakes will get bigger so expect quicker accumulation later in the morning. That's how I'm reading it.

Interesting stuff Chris so an increase in temps at higher levels increases the moisture and intensity. Am I reading that right?

As long as it stays this overcast with the ceiling so low and the precipitation remains then evaporative cooling should offset any solar radiation

At face value , not a classic snow shadow in effect currently, although as Kasim has said it could well kick in later, currently wind is only 7mph from the east.

Light to moderate snow in Manchester all morning so far. Note that the MetO app said completely dry so it appears UKV has overplayed the shield effect.

Sadly we have puddles rather than lying snow but it is great to see moderate snow falling.

I visited Llandudno many times and I've always wondered if there has ever been lying snow where that row of houses are on the road going up to the Orme and nothing right on the promenade

Very bright here even with the snizzel falling which has got heavier.

temps below zero but any surface that warms slightly in the sun is stopping any settling snow.

grass is okay thou
