What I've found this year is what was seen as mild/warm only 10 years ago is now seen as cold by certain people.  You can bet your bottom dollar at the end of the year, some will claim 2023 has been a cold year when in actual fact it will at the very least be one of the mildest, if not THE mildest on record!

Couldn't agree more!

Indeed and surely the first half of this autumn must  have been one of the warmest if not the warmest on record . Then some complaining about the cold already ,when temperatures have been fairly average the last week or 2. Can't get my head around that.

Yes, after the hot September and very warm start to October, recent weeks have certainly not been cold and like you say, close to average!  I struggle to understand it too!

Aye but from now it will be, warm=wet/windy, clear/sunny=cold/frosty

Indeed, the change from October to November is the precise time of year when I flip from warmer-than-normal to colder-than-normal as my preference.

This is illustrated by yesterday being my favourite day of the current unsettled spell, even though it was probably the coldest. It was also sunny bar one or two short lived showers.

While mild and sunny spells in November can happen (1989, 2011) they are notable for their rarity.

Yes, some claimed the summer was cold!

To be fair July and August probably were, when it comes to day maxima at least. In this area there seemed to be a lot of sub-20 maxima and almost nothing above 25 in those two months. That is unusual.

I do agree about there not being much cold to speak of in the current spell though. Thursday was cold and wet, yesterday was cold and mostly dry, but aside from those two days, nothing cold to speak of and certainly no severe cold.

A cold dry spell with strong easterlies is arguably just what we need right now, to get rid of all the lingering damp. Only problem is, if it happens anytime soon, "ice in November to bear a duck..." will kick in and we'll doubtless end up with the wet, windy and mild winter from hell!

Is it really that difficult to understand that some people feel cold relative to what the air temperature outside values might be?

It's no different to people who feel hot in the Spring or Summer, when the air temperature outside is average. There's nothing to understand.. it's a non-argument.

I tend to find wet and windy in winter very warm/tropical, warmer than a sunny April day with a minimum of -1 or near that, or even a May day with a cold minimum like 2-3 degrees, to me feels much warmer in Jan with raging gales and 11 degree min

It's very strange seeing 964.1 hPa on my barometer at the moment.. and yet the 953.9 a few days ago eclipsed it.

28.8mm of rain today. 72mm already this month. 18th consecutive day of rain has totalled 225.8mm. 💥

Agreed! Unfortunately 'some' seem unable to grasp such a basic concept, it is a pointless circular argument.

8c is not cold, take another 6c off that, and then it's chilly

In your opinion 😉, yada yada, 🥱 this circular discussion is so tedious.

We are all different, our perceptions of heat and cold all differ......👍

Synoptics can be misleading, you would look at this chart and think slow moving pulses of rain nationwide, alas today here has been dry, sunny and calm.

Where as here it's been very wet all day.

All very subjective  ,when you hit 63,  and take blood thinners, 8  degrees can feel a tad nippy. As for shorts, not a chance.  🤣

We're all different,  I  can remember having to wear them to Primary School in the mid 60's Winter , and Summer .  My legs used to be bl....dy freezing cold .  Put  me off them for life , it has to be roasting  for me to get into a pair.

Saying that, I've spent most of my 47  years of working life in the Building Trade,so you could say I'm pretty hardened to it now  😄

8c is chilly, it’s just under our daytime average January temperature here in Exeter in mid winter ie cold

I’d love a log burner, would save on energy costs that’s for sure
