Looks like a pretty cold spell for October is coming up, wouldn't be surprised if somewhere in England records a very early single digit maximum this weekend! If not then, surely sometime during next week

Yes a few northern stations might record their first single digit max of season, most likely Sunday after lows around freezing. The sun begins to have minimal effect now on.

It's 3pm and 10-13C across Yorkshire currently, and we're on the warm side of the Pennines in wall to wall sunshine.  The Lake district has some sizeable cold shower clouds holding the temperature back so it's only 7-10C there. Meanwhile in Scotland, radar and ski cameras suggest it's snowing down to about 800-1000m, with the forecast for that to drop to about 500m overnight. They are clearly already into the Arctic air their so it's no surprise that numerous Highland glen stations that won't see a great deal of sun are currently only showing 4-7C.

So there are already a sprinkling of single figure highs in NW England today and there should spread further east and south tomorrow.

Yes, I think today has done it here. Max 9 degrees, largely due to a continuous feed of showers. Didn't expect it quite so soon, given the anomalous warmth recently.

The earliest single digit maximum here was 14th October 1997. Its one day before the earliest air frost on 15th October 1981 and two days before the latest 20C, which was 16th October 2017.

We're a long way from anything like that though this year!

Perhaps not that long away after all. We're sat at 8.3C at midday. Its possible we'll still go over, but it'll be close! Only one day after the earliest date aswell.

Yes I think this weekend is ending up colder thsn anticipated. We recorded 9 degree max yesterday, its currently 6.9 degrees. We have more sun than yesterday but the baseline temp much lower..

Single digit maxes seemed an age away a week ago. Shows how relatively cold polar air and clear skies by mid Oct can produce quite notably below average means.

12C at both Leconfield and Humberside airport now so I assume you ended up above 10C pretty comfortably in the end?

A high of 12.6C here today, 12.7C yesterday. Nothing remarkable.

Didn't even realise on the day as I was on the way to Wales but 4th November had a max of 9.0C back home. About the time in autumn it was expected.

Also a sub 10C max today, 9.8C on the personal station.

We had a max of 7C today in bright sunshine so thought that I would look back to see when our first single figure max was. It was the7th October and a very different day as it was cold and wet all day with a max of 8C.

Which is crazy as that same day was 24.5°C here!

Maximum of 09.6°C here today so the first sub 10°C max of the season.

Our weather that day coming pretty much straight down from the Arctic and then swinging in from theNorth Sea. Further South the air was sourced from the Atlantic and a very warm SW Europe.

Yesterday was our first 0900-0900 single figure maximum of the season. The 31st October managed it from 0000-0000 but it went above 10C early the next morning.
