The army is called in to help drivers in southern Sweden amid a big freeze across the Nordic countries.

Some stunning looking Winter charts  let’s hopefully count this one down like we did back in 2018 & 2010 and unlike in Feb 2018 in the real core of winter too which will inevitably increase severity once the cold lands, there will be wobbles too so buckle up for the ride. Don’t worry about snow at this stage - small features may pop up at short notice if such a scenario develops - both Feb/ Mar 2018 & 2010 were snowy right across the NW from Liverpool & the Wirral to the Peak District even when initially things look more favoured for snowfall in the East/ SE & NE of the country.

Exciting times in the weather model watching world. Still a lot that could change and the mad thread has a tendency to implode when it goes wrong. More realistically. I am looking forward to high pressure next week, I’ve missed crisp, calm days this won’t and hopefully this will be with some sunshine.

Perfect, if we manage a north easterly, it is certainly going to be notable.

Tamara spoke of a block meandering back and forth between Greenland & Scandinavia, is this our modern day doozy of a Winter coming up? Not sure, but a chance of a proper proper cold spell and not snap is certainly a possibility.

Ok. It’s going colder. Depends on how cold and embedded which is a start. I can only see anything of interest from the 15th and things only really get going at +279 The real action. Which is in total FI. We just wasted a good chunk of our time watching the model piffle over the Christmas period. Can’t say I can get too enthusiastic as yet.

I’m cautiously optimistic - best chance at a severe cold spell since 2018 but if we are still looking at Day 10 charts by this time next week we know we’ve been led down the garden path Hoping to count this one down though in some form

And, given my, admittedly failing, memory of quite a few stonking winters, I think @Tamara will be right enough. Here's to a snowfest!

Our family, like the hundreds of other voluntary rainfall observers for the Met Office /Environment Agency, have posted off our monthly data, handwritten on cards, for December 2023 from the official manual daily gauge. Total for Dec here 300.1 mm.

I also type up the data into laptop spreadsheets for our own use and for the interest of others.

The family noticed when doing end of year computer calculations and charts, that alas I had included a typo!      I had entered 4.1 mm instead of 14.1mm for one day in the record wet July.

So that 10mm makes a difference!

The total for 2023 was 1956.1 mm and thus was the 3rd wettest year and NOT the 4th, as I had stated before.   Beaten only by 2012 with 1984.0 mm  and 2020 with 2009.6 mm.

Family tell me that the spell July – Dec 2023 was the wettest 6 month period we've recorded in the last 54 years since the gauge was set up.

Here's a chart they have produced for the rainfall for 2023.

Reporting from Wythenshawe hospital today, had 2nd operation for cancer they found Aug last year.  Prognosis is good, despite treatment I'm fine and dandy and still positive.

Got a lovely room with a view and 2 squirrels for company.  Wot no rain? It's dry outside, overcast with odd pocket of blue sky.  Should be feeling colder when I'm fit to go home.

@Kasim Awan I hope your operation goes well with a speedy recovery. My regards.
