Updated February 29 at 10:50 a.m

Model calculations show that today around 8.5-9 million cubic meters of magma has accumulated under Svartsengi. The speed of the land giant has remained more or less the same for the past few days. In general, the rate of land erosion has decreased when an eruption is near.

According to model calculations, around half a million cubic meters of magma accumulates under Svartsengi per day. If you look at the eve of previous volcanic eruptions in the Sundhnúks crater series, the probability of an eruption increases when the volume has reached 8 – 13 million cubic meters. If magma accumulation continues at the same rate, the upper limit will be reached next week.

matty40s that’s a sweet view tbh, it is steaming just inside that main crater but it’s likely the old lava cooling but…. Not for long 😆

It's now Friday so I'm surprised that (for now) all is quiet on the Reykjanes, it could change with little to no warning but my current thinking based on data is that magma has now found a new pathway under Svartsengi which was already in partial melt. Until this cavity is filled and re-pressurises it's going to remain quiet until the very last moment before the eruption which (if I had to guess) will occur early-hours Sunday.

I could be wrong and it could go up in the next hour 😄 but current inflation rate and GPS uplift data indicates there's at least another day or two to wait.

Interesting that Krisuvik had a swarm beforehand which is something that also happened 2 eruptions ago back in January. I wonder if hypothetically this is nature's warning indicator that magma is on the move across the western side of the Reykjanes and a subdued effect on the eastern, all that volume moving in a direction towards Krisuvik but being blocked by the Fagradalsfjall zone has to have a forcing component to it.

Of course no guarantee that the dike intrusion will reach the surface but it will be nice too see it break out if it does.

Just saw 2 arctic foxes walk past one of the volcanic webcams.  Here is the clip i managed to get for anyone who is interested 🦊

Black and white fox, bit like the wolf Gods Hati & Skoll, they are here for the upcoming show ⚡🐺

Allseasons-Si did you see the black fox just before the white one?  I got both on mine which was pretty cool 👌🏻

activity seems to be dying down, it just needs a small push and it will go tonight but if no intrusion occurs then likely a false alarm but could be a at 3am for all we know.  It seems to like to blow in the early hours 😅

Icelandic met office now seems to think no eruption more likely, magna not as much as previous and may have entered dyke without risk of emission.

At this point, the micro-seismic activity that started just before four o'clock today has stopped. It is likely that the magma flow has stopped for the time being.

Deformation continues to be measured in the area. It is therefore too early to say that the magma flow is over and that there will be no eruption this time. In the case of magma flow, deformation is measured for several hours after the seismic activity stops.

toggerob it will probably wait until 3-6am like before just so the majority misses the first initial action haha.  😁

Fen Wolf Yes afterwards when someone else mentioned it on my FB post

the earthquake swarm was another lateral movement of the dyke intrusion just like the Nov 10th one

inflation continues to rise Svartsengi but we have to see what trend this takes in the next day or so.
