Lava flow heading down the Feb 8th route towards the road again...

Also lava flow heading south towards Grindavik.

Quite a fast moving event for now which caught me off guard as I was checking the cams only a minute or two after the fissure initially erupted, not expecting to be seeing anything. The southern arm of the lava-flow looks like it can easily reach the south coast by sunrise if eruptive rate continues.

I’m so impressed with the Icelandic authorities that they straight away get to work with the excavators building new berms etc to protect property and utility services. I know they are well prepared for this sort of scenario, but can you imagine in this country they would all still be standing around deciding what to do!

Looks like the lava front has stalled and won't reach the sea which will be due to the eruption declining. Surprised it's still going to be honest.

 snowdog

They closed the gap where the road went through the recently built berm, good forward planning in having the material ready to close it if needed 👍

It's difficult to tell visually how much the amount of output has declined overnight, Svartsengi GPS shows a 100mm (10cm) drop in ground elevation since the eruption began but as we're transitioning from a initial 3km fissure to more individual cone-vents, it might give the appearance of being more vigorous due to the more concentrated eruption areas than it actually is.

Interesting the 4hr GPS showing a drop across all stations. The 24 hr plots which have updated ten minutes ago show no drop and continued inflation. The 4hr ones will be corrected the 24hr plots somehow have dubious data or haven't actually updated despite the time stamp. One of the eruptions, a much smaller one there wasn't deflation I think it was the second one which was very short in length.

I actually worry that in building those berms they have perhaps set themselves up for problems before long if things don't ease up.

If you look at the graphic below it shows the lava field from this eruption. This has in itself now created a natural berm adding height to the topography.

If we see an eruption further west it could trap lava along the berm across the top of Grindavik. It won't be able to travel east, it may try to travel west along the berm but I should imagine it would overtop the berm where any is trapped between the northern manmade berm and the lava field.

As beautiful as these eruptions are, in reality they are disney eruptions compared to say if Teide goes off but I also want to see the blue lava in Java.

Okay the gps on this map are only updating the date stamps.

VAFRI.IS

Skjálfti

However the 8 hour ones are updating which are beginning to show a possible reinflation which means that possibly magma coming in is greater than than what's being drawn out. If so this come mean a longer eruption that expected. Just checked the four hour ones and inflation has resumed.

The PIT In my eyes there does seem a different consistency to the magma than seen with the previous 3x eruptions, with enough silica/crystals in the flow to begin building splatter cones which imo indicates a more cooled-down lava that's also being intruded by the fresh inflation. I have to wonder if the sill intrusion event 2 weeks ago has now provided a clear-run for the outflow from Svartsengi and this eruption begins to tie more in-line with the Fagradalsfjall eruptions in terms of longevity.

toggerob  To early to say what the chemical composition is and whether the findings will be published or not.

A nice view of the spatter cones on the Sundhnúkar - Grindavik (Fagradalsfjall) (Cam 4) today, reminiscent of Litli-Hrutur's early days.

If there is a sustained eruption and tourists are legally allowed to watch like before then i might fly up there

Still going this morning this morning. Volcano one experts nil.

Looks like inflow into the chamber is greater than whats being erupted as land is still rising.

The eruption can be seen from parts of the Reykjanesbraut at Vogar + Keflavik, although to see anything substantial you'd need a good pair of binocs and at least a 400mm lens on a Mirrorless/DSLR camera. There's a lot of variables but if the north access to the Blue Lagoon becomes available again and the gas-emissions aren't too high, I could see the authorities beginning regulated access to a suitable viewing point for tourists/sightseers.

toggerob cheers for the info Rob, i really want to go up if it becomes a proper tourist eruption that you can fly over with a helicopter or walk right up to ideally; like before 👍

Looks liek most of the GPS stations are showing a fairly steady output which suggests outflow is now matching inflow. Could mean a longish eruption. Did see some more lava make it way down to the barriers this morning. By day you can't see anything perhaps drone coverage or night will reveal more ad how it's effecting the barriers i.e getting ready to overtop.
