  1. Must be something to do with the path the sun takes. It will get higher in the sky than it does here but will also descend downwards towards the horizon at a more more perpendicular angle. So in the space of half an hour after sunset it will have disappeared further below the horizon than it would here.
  2. I'm adjusting to the darker nights nicely this year. I can still play 5 a side and go down to the local floodlit driving range. Neither of which i did last winter.
  3. Very impressive to see an already above average figure set to rise further and even more so that it's in the last 3rd of the month.
  4. No, i think its appropriate that the nights draw in as it gets colder and wetter. What use is evening daylight when its cold and damp outside. It might as well be dark. However in Summer with the long dry spells and warm evenings the light nights are really appreciated.
  5. September was actually a tiny bit below average so it was not unusually warm at all. I dont post in the MOD now till next Spring so i dont really know whats been said but i cant see much cold around either for the forseeable future. Of course sudden switcharounds do happen though. Plenty of time for the cold to arrive through November and into December.
  6. The footy season would be cancelled, the economy would nosedive and mostly everyone would be depressed at not being able to go about their daily business.
  7. Flood warning for the North Sea coast around Spurn Point. I would so love to be there at high tide in a gale force Northerly. Wouldnt want to get cut off though.
  8. We have colder weather on the way which i guess its what you expect in October. However, apart from 1 day of possible clear northerlies its looking like a north sea muckfest. I am hoping low pressure doesnt park itself in the North Sea as it can bring very dreary conditions to eastern coasts.
  9. Cooler air filtering south midweek as the high repositions itself but remaining warm in the south west.
  10. Sunday looking very pleasant at the moment with light winds the further south you are and temperatures touching 20c. Obviously dependant on the all important sunshine amounts at this time of year.
  11. The weather can change all of a sudden from warmth one week to cold and frosty the next so just because the first half of October will be warm and settled it doesnt mean there wont be a cold outbreak later on in the month. But it has to be said that as far as the models go out its looking like above average temperatures and high pressure will rule over the UK. In the corresponding part of Spring at the start of April we were still in single figures and we had just come out of March which was several degrees colder than average. September was merely average with a warm final 10 days. Its not been unusually warm so far at all.
  12. I'm happy to see more of this dry and warm stuff well into the first half of November. The ground round here is still very hard and reminiscent of dry periods during the summer. There is still a yellow tinge to the grass in parts of the garden too. The gales can commence when all the trees have lost their leaves and high pressure loses its ability to bring warmth. Usually from mid November onwards.
  13. Out to day 10 the GEFS mean has pressure remaining high to the south of the UK feeding up very warm air for the time of year. Upper temperatures are of the sort that you would expect in an average July.
  14. As much as i love the seasonal chill in the build up to Christmas, i care little about what happens on the big day itself. So if it was 15c and blowing a SW gale i would love every minuite of it. As for the mildest winter on record. I hear that a bit of the cold stuff is necesary for nature to completely shut down before reawakening again in the Spring. So whilst i would take the mildest on record, an average winter would be just as preferable with some cold occurring from time to time throughout the 3 months.
  15. Bedroom is a pleasant 18.5c. Any cooler and it would be too chilly and the heating would have to go on.
  16. Its only late September. Whilst there is still some daylight in the evening i look for mild and benign conditions, which look like continuing for a while. But the lack of sun is rather disappointing. Once the clocks go back in late October and the trees have shed their leaves then the gales and storms can roll in. But to be honest i wont turn down a quiet spell of weather at any time of year.
  17. Its been a case of the models looking better than the actual conditions they produce. If it had been mid summer we would have been looking a widespread high 20s/low 30s but this time of year is more uncertain what you are going to get. Autumn 2011 shows what we could have had but i suspect the main problem this time has been the origin of the air in the first place coming up from the SW and the lack of wind to clear all the cloud away. I must say though that the past 2 days have been glorious in East Yorkshire. Yesterday evening had the feel of a warm July evening.
  18. Rather unsettled and warm from the GEFS ensemble mean in a weeks time with the best of the dry weather to be found in the east.
  19. Increasingly unsettled but staying warm looks to be the way things are going as we approach the weekend. With high pressure dominant to our northeast i cant see any way through for low presssure so it looks like staying over or just to the west of the UK dragging up more warm air.
  20. Not exactly the sort of temperatures i was hoping for with me running the Great Yorkshire Run in Sheffield looking for a PB. Looks rather warm and muggy.
  21. It looks at the moment from the UKMO and GFS that any cool northerly to end the month has been removed. Instead the picture for the next 7 days looks to be a fairly benign one with warmth building through the first part of the week, then tending to ease off later on but still remaining warm. Winds staying light too so it looks a pleasant end to September. More unsettled conditions may push into western areas later on in the week and into next weekend.
  22. Should be decent BBQ weather, and not too chilly in the evening either with temperatures set to hold up well overnight.
