  1. I never look forward to winter, but there are aspects of it that i do like, like doing the Christmas Shopping on a cold, calm and frosty day with the festive feeling all around. And the sunsets after a cold and bright day in December with the mist hanging over the fields. December is the month when i most welcome winter as it seems most appropriate in the run up to Christmas. As for snow, i wouldnt feel let down is we didnt get any at all. I doesnt really thrill me but i would welcome a northerly for 3/4 days bringing some snow showers to the east coast before it clears off. The main thing i wish for in winter is sunshine which is great regardless of the temperature. Bitter, biting, dull easterlies are an absoulte no.

  2. Yes, I'm not making it up, it was a cloudy summer here. July's sunshine anomaly wasn't even that great compared to almost everywhere else. I was hoping to get over 50% of possible sun in July but that didn't happen. It's been a cloudy year in general though with only April and July having above average sunshine, although February was very 'average' according to the Reading Met site.

The overall sunshine anomaly maps for summer 2013 and the individual month ones would suggest otherwise.

  3. i dislike this time of year most.... summers over, everything is diminishing, temps, light, flora, hopes, the yecchy stinky aroma of wet rotting vegetation, cool dewy mornings, nothing ahead but horrible nasty cold crap.

Theres been a horrible pooey stench from the nearby fields hanging over the village for days so i can certainly relate to that. Compare that to the lovely fragrant aroma of the hedgerows coming into flower and all the fresh growth in May.

  4. Sometimes statistics do not give a real picture of weather so here is my list of summers that I believe or definitely felt were better than summer 2013

    that I have experienced...

    1975

    1976

    1983

    1984

    1989

    1990

    1995

    1996

    1997

    2003

    2006

So going back almost 40 years you find 11 summers that were better than 2013. That means that theres much more that were worse than 2013. And i look on your list and find 1997. August was stunning but June 1997 was the wettest of the century.

  5. I can actually imagine what a chart like that would bring quite vividly - fast moving dark scud clouds, a strong breeze and fine drizzle, like Christmas Day 2013.

Anything that brings drizzle is a big no in my book, That chart may bring drizzle to some but right over here on the east coast i fancy we would see the best of the brightness. A westerly wind direction would bring more countrywide sunshine and still mild temps.

To redress the balance, i do like some cold like during the run up to Christmas. I remember last Winter doing the Crimbo shopping on a cold and bright day in December with a temperature of about 5c. It felt very appropriate for the time of year.

  6. Overall I was quite happy with Winter 11-12 it was comfortably mild for the most part, apart from that chunk of February Posted Image but my over-riding memory of that Winter was the very mild Christmas day, think it was something like 13 degrees here. I remember having some family over for dinner and even with the door open for the smokers it did not feel cold at all for the time of year. I feel that Winter might be just a blip though Posted Image but who knows.

It was a very sunny winter here with all months having above average sunshine. Talking of above average sunshine, i would love a repeat of February 2008. December 2001 sounds fantastic too with abundant sunshine, record breaking for some parts. slightly colder than average so i would imagine there would be some festive frosty mornings.

  7. not a very pleasant day... humid, sticky but without the sun/warmth . a blanket of cloud covers us... here at least... robbing us of what might have been a splendid warm day.

It was a different story. I was sat out at lunchtime eating my sandwich in some lovely warm sunshine. Coming out of work the sunshine was baking hot. More to come tomorrow!

  8. February I remember as constantly dull, cold/raw (but not freezing) and windy. Pretty grim but then my image of it was tainted with many mornings spent freezing to death on Tamworth station changing trains.

I had gone down to London one weekend late in February to watch the Gunners vs Aston Villa. I recall stepping off the train in Kings Cross at about 9am in the morning wondering why i had chosen to get such an early train down and having to endure 6 hours of cold before the match. It was in one of those all too frequent raw easterly spells. Even in mid April i was travelling down to London again looking at all the bare hedgerows and very sorry looking fields. It soon changed though within a month.

Lovely and warm today i must add. People out in tshirts again after yesterdays coats.

  9. ECM 12z still showing a wet Friday for many in the south / south east. Moving up the East of the country during the course of the day. Many many posts about continuing warmth but nothing about the rain. Maybe its denial lol.

Maybe is because of the last time we were forecast heavy rain moving north, last Saturday i believe, and it stayed mostly dry during daylight hours for many parts. It was only the SE that saw any meaningful rain.

    Nothing really showing up here

  10. Confidence is building for a second spell of warmth to affect most parts beginning at the weekend and lasting into the following week. The Azores high builds northeast and joins forces with high pressure to the east of the UK. After departing briefly at the end of the week, the very warm upper temperatures push back westwards

Rather impressive to see 10c upper temps so far north so late in the year.

  11. thought todays weather was superb! exactly what i think august as being... ok its not hot, but patchy cloud, strong sun, bright never dull, fresh breeze... great! much better then those clamy sticky days recently.

I thought it was too cool to be honest and the change in airmass didnt bring added sunshine either. The post cricket match drinks has to be held inside instead of in the beer garden like last Monday.

  12. Sad to see the back of Summer 2013. Its been such a relief to finally get a decent summer, one thats warmer, drier and sunnier than average for the first time in 7 years. Heres hoping summer 2014 is just as good. But i must say, the models havent recognised its now september so i will gladly take every last helping of summerlike conditions.

  13. July and August have been consistently warm and dry here with some very warm spells during July but none of the hot temps that central and western parts saw. But still i was very happy with July and Almost as pleased with August which has been a very pleasant month of adequate sunshine and very little rainfall.

June was not that great here with some frequent spells of heavy rain during the second half of the month which threatened to tip the rainfall figures above average. But the first half was dry and rather sunny albeit quite cool.

Overall its been a very good summer. There has always been a settled and warm spell showing on the models which has made it a very easy and satisfying summer of model watching. It comes just behind 2006 but further behind 2003 which was very warm throughout. It beats 2005 though due to the spells of very cool weather that were present during that summer.
