  1. As much as I welcome the increased daylight around the date of the clocks going forward, I tend to find it a bit if a false Dawn, as the temperature up here rarely rises in tandem. In fact some of our coldest feeling weather of the year can be in spring, if we get stuck under the wrong pattern. It’s quite discombobulating.

I tend to like this time of year, I think it’s nice to squeeze out the last of the decent sunlight (if we get it) and daylight. Becoming less and less of a fan of winter though so I’m trying not to focus on what’s ahead 😂

  2. With it being the last day of August we are solidly into the ‘Dog days’ of summer. I’m more and more sympathetic with the idea that seasons are based around the period between the solstices and the equinoxes, rather than strictly three month periods. Would be more than delighted if summer made a wee reappearance during September.

I know not a weather related observation as such but I have noticed that upland areas of the UK are often treeless looking more like a Icelandic tundra when areas with similar climate and landscapes elsewhere have lush rainwoodlands such as Western Norway, coastal Alaska, British Colombia, western Washington state and southern New Zeeland.

Ketchikan Alaska (Which has a climate basically identical to Fort William Scotland, I would estimate sunshine hours to be about 1200-1300 per year for this place)

Re: Scottish upland areas, over a certain height it will be difficult for trees to grow due to the amount of wind, but part of the reason that so much is barren is deforestation which happened over centuries, and accelerated by landowners who wanted to use the land for sheep grazing.

Next time you see parts of Scotland described as ‘unspoilt’, realise that it’s typically not the case - it’s a description which usually is associated with the continued under-development of the area because of those same landed interests.

  4. Just spent the best part of three weeks in Central Europe. The sort of trip that probably needs to be prescribed on the NHS during a summer like this. Bit stifling at times and incredibly high minimum temps, but it also had this wonderful thing…. Persistent warm sunshine! The ability to go outside in shorts and not worry about rain is a magical thing.

I saw in another part of the forum a suggestion that this summer has only been ‘average’ as opposed to one of the worst on record. I have to say I’m struggling with that description. Maybe that is the case in parts of England, or maybe the warm June saved it, but July was a total washout and August doesn’t look like it’s been much better. It’s like nature has it in for us.

Hoping against hope that the dog days can deliver some warmth and some brightness, even with the lengthening shadows and earlier sunsets. The seasonal return of Autumn, as opposed to the mid-year version we’ve experienced, can wait til October.

  5. Even by our rain sodden west of Scotland standards, this summer has been really poor. Was nice during June, but even then we had our moments of heavy rain (you might remember the Scotland match at Hampden had to be delayed due to a downpour). Struggling to think of a poorer summer, and there’s a fair amount of competition!

  6. Not the worst day today. Nice to get a wee bit of luck with that heavy rain heading for Northern England instead of us. Not so good for them sadly.

Starting to reach the conclusion that easily our nicest and most reliable weather periods here are May into June and August into September. Poor school kids get short changed every other year.

Noctilucent cloud, the summer aurora in my book and just as spectacular.

Here is the view here of those clouds 20 mins ago...

Some beefy showers this evening, otherwise a very useable day of sunny intervals and light winds.

Thanks! Amazing that we can both see the same clouds but if they’re so high up in the atmosphere that would make sense. I was sure the explanation would be something along those lines. Looked pretty stunning in person, the photo didn’t do it justice.
