Spring tends to be cold up here. Sometimes the coldest time of the year, but there’s little enjoyment from a weather point of view, it’s just annoying. The nights get lighter with little to no accompanying increase in warmth.
Exception recently was 2020, so I wouldn’t complain about something similar if I’m honest. Even a pleasant spell during March into April would be fine.

Actual sunshine in Glasgow today! Rejoice!

Yeah Glasgow has been like that for about a fortnight it feels like. Only punctuated by rain and darkness.

Just wondered what would happen.

Bit blowy outside.

The Danish met office have named it Storm Otto. At least they’re taking it seriously even if the UK Met aren’t bothered about it…

It rained in Glasgow yesterday for about 30 minutes. Most interesting thing that’s happened in about a fortnight.

What sort of spaz burns site waste in their home?
Probably people desperate for warmth and with very little money.

Dunno if there any other Guardian readers on here? But they've started a completely one-eyed anti-woodburning stove campaign, such that I've seen 3 articles with a total lack of balance in the last week. Their thing is the uncontrolled particulate pollution in built-up areas. (I thought there have been smokeless zones in urban areas since the Clean Air Act 1956...? Suppose it merely shows that the vast majority of Guardian readers live in cities, even more so than the population as a whole. Perhaps. I feel a bit aggrieved as wood is a renewable and relatively cheap fuel... and most smoke from my chimney is over the firth within a couple of minutes...
Not a guardian reader precisely because of this sort of nonsense. They had an article the other week about why, as plants are now thought to be quite intelligent, that perhaps we shouldn’t eat them.
A paper for people with too much time to think and not enough time spent in the real world. There’s a reason why it’s popular with academics and humanities graduates.

You should get the banhammer for that kind of language on 2nd February 🫣
Ha! I guess it must be this boring mild weather making me think we’d be as well getting some nice spring sunshine. Might be my age as well, cannot really be bothered with dark and cold like I used to be!
I also struggle with the way in which spring comes along and brings extra light but no great warmth. So any early warmth would be welcome, but I suppose I should be realistic and wait til about mid March!

Wouldn’t mind an early spring now.

Warning for Tuesday now reduced to cover less than half of the mainland. Bit of a farce really, no model was showing damaging winds across the southern half of Scotland, absolutely no need for a warning 3 days in advance...
Think I’d sympathise with them here. There’s plenty of flak around if a warning doesn’t go out. Better to be discussing this than damage or injuries from a storm that people hadn’t prepared for because advance warning wasn’t given.

Looks like snow or ice chances are minimal for the foreseeable which, to be honest, I’m pretty content with. Wouldn’t mind a mild end to winter or early spring.
First signs of lighter evenings coming back now too.

No snow here unsurprisingly. The snow that I thought was headed this way was gobbled up by the Arrochar Alps by the looks of it.

Which would obviously be a Loch effect in this case.

Since late yesterday afternoon the weather has been absolutely foul here. We’re more than used to rain here but this is pretty dire. Felt like this almost solidly since just before the new year.

Torrential rain in Glasgow. Actually feels warm outside.

Some snow in the ground here but is raining. Reckon that’s it for the Glasgow area now. On the plus side all those with blocked up plumbing might get some respite.

Do we think the breakdown is coming this weekend then? What about some decent snowfall beforehand (I’m out the country until midweek so a bit oblivious to any snowfall that may have happened since yesterday).

Totally agree more widely on that! (excluding the North East where some places have had decent snow) I'm seeing articles with "bone chilling - 3c" and similar, it's the middle of December, frosts overnight are totally normal! So far, there is nothing special about this cold snap, hopefully that will change over the coming days and hopefully weeks, but so far it's just a cold start to December.
The hyperbole surrounding this spell of weather has been off the scale.
My concern is if we do get genuinely frigid temperatures that it gets attributed to climate change and described as unprecedented, when in reality it’s just a once or twice a decade event.

Not sure of the terminology but last night Mars went behind the moon for a while. Think it's called Lunar occulation of Mars?
Thought I could see a planet close to the moon this morning. Was quite a sight.
Just very cold and crisp in Glasgow. Can’t see us joining the snow action but we can hope.

Apologies to those still stuck under the cloud, but it’s an absolutely glorious sunny day in Glasgow today. Sitting outside in a jumper. Roll on spring if it’s going to be like this (it won’t, but I can dream…).
