  1. Really odd this morning. Overnight it hovered between 1 and 2 all night, and then suddenly about 2 or 3 hours before sunrise it started to drop, I thought it was going to be the usual thing where it drops a bit at sunrise and then starts to climb again, especially with there being actual sun this morning - but it didn't, it just kept falling - all the way down to -1.8C It did not make it back above freezing until around 11am. We reached 4.3C today.
  2. So, we dropped to -0.2 overnight, and reached a high of 7.1 Min < 0: 1 Day. Max > 5: 2 Days. Max > 10: 1 Day.
  3. I'm really hoping this was a slightly exaggerated funny post - because I understand what each of those words mean - on their own - but when assembled in the way quoted.... I ... brain....melt....
  4. So apparently we have a 2.2C /hour temperature drop - suddenly it's 4.4C... I don't know where that came from! Been busy with decorations today so haven't paid a lot of attention to the weather - I was under the impression it was supposed to be mild - but now I am starting to wonder - are we expecting frost? EDIT: 4.3C
  5. So today we reached 10.1 which made me realise I should add max temperatures to the Winter Summary pages - so I did that today. www.bordersweather.co.uk/wxwinter.php It will be interesting to compare this Winter to previous Winters - on a purely temperature based scale, nothing to do whether it snowed or not. (PS - it will start reporting 2016 summary information after midnight. because Weather Display doesn't write the dayfile until about 00:12 so on the 1st December the dayfile ends on 30 November and thus it is not winter)
  6. These are pretty much the posters I look out for - though I essentially understand practically nothing when Tamara posts - which is fine - after all - it's a model output discussion thread, it's just that I don't even have a vague clue what the post is actually saying.
  7. I have high hopes that the new GOES-16 satellite will significantly improve the GFS model - but I honestly don't know a huge amount about what the new satellite will mean in real terms to the likes of the GFS and possibly even the UKMO model. I hope someone like @fergieweather or @Jo Farrow might be able to provide us mere mortals with a bit more information on what benefits both the professionals and the amateurs are likely to see in the near term.
  8. Yeah - I've noticed he does tend to stay away when it's a bit more cut throat in there. I feel sorry for the poor moderators when it gets like that.
  9. These people are supposed to hit the Valium when it gets bad - not slash their wrists.... I think they need stronger Valium. I suppose I better wander in with my hands over my eyes and peek through my fingers to find out what Fergie is saying about the whole thing.
  10. PS - am I the only one mildly amused that Scotland has several cold November days and potentially breaks some Temperature records and all anyone really says is Baremare (Braemore?) reached it's lowest temperature (not sure it broke a record though?) England however - has a cold night - and it's all anyone can talk about......
  11. Did you happen to see if Fergie said anything? As long as Fergie isn't announcing the death of Winter I'm happy enough. ITV tonight were talking about Winter and basically said getting cold, staying cold, warming up in Spring. (Which some might point out - is pretty much what you would expect of a typical Winter)
  12. Literally cannot stop giggling!! @CatchMyDrift having spent years telling my friends in England - that Scotland is not gale force winds and torrential rain - we decided to have a run up to John O'Groats one week.... it was gale force winds and torrential rain......
  13. So basically.... the Scottish climate will actually be the way that everyone outside of Scotland believes it is right now?
  14. @CatchMyDrift I could write a script that ignores 95% of the posts and just analyses the tone of probably 10 peoples posts to get an idea of whether it is in general looking good for cold or not so good. Otherwise - I could probably just count the number of times valium or prozac is mentioned. I could probably also count how many times "winter is over" is said - and link that to a reverse temperature scale - ie the more often it is posted, the colder it is going to be. On Topic: Yesterday we ended with an average temperature of 1.5C and we reached -4.2C overnight. It is currently -1.3C outside and gradually getting warmer.
  15. For the love of god someone make a model watchers watchers thread - that right there from @edo is exactly the reason it needs to exist! (PS - we have been there before, all singing from the same song sheet.... it's what happens when the 0Z or 12z runs and decides it's going to be an Indian summer all Winter and the CFS decides it will snow in July.... that's when all hell breaks loose! Despite the number of times the models do this - it's like people become invested in every run and believe that what the model shows at the very moment is cast in stone and will not change... even though it will... the next time the model runs )
  16. Wow...... well not only are you probably not seeing them again..... After 10 years..... that tree is probably an ex-tree now, a deceased tree.... I'd maybe drop a hint... "You know that tree that you borrowed 10 years ago and didn't give me back... Did you know B&Q are running a 25% off offer on lights and trees?"
  17. That's what Christmas Lights are for.....
  18. Ooooo let's be really really meta and have a model watchers watchers thread!! Edit: I could create a website that I claim uses advanced machine learning, and language sentiment analysis to determine if it is "safe" to enter the model thread and responds with "YES" or "NO"..... (but really just determines if it is between October and March and always returns NO if the condition matches)
  19. While I am a fan of snow and cold..... anything faster than a 4C per hour temperature drop is just a tad too cold for me..... and given the choice - I prefer my pee not to instantly freeze mid-stream....
  20. So. The frost has never really lifted all day - not even where the sun has been shining. We achieved a max of 2.3C and a low (after I posted earlier) of -6.4C As it stands our overage temperature is sitting at -2.9C (which is currently the max). Outside it is -3.4 and dropping at 0.6C per hour. 14 stations in the league table are below 0, Peebles is at the top at -3.6 and Easter Badbea is at +11.3
  21. Hi Graham, Welcome to the forum! It's about time you joined! Want to have a chat with you at some point about how feasible it would be to create a 360 weather camera. But I'll catch you somewhere else to chat about it after I've had a sleep.
  22. I'm a fan of cold, frost, snow etc..... But I also rely on extremely expensive LPG for heating so....... A brief milder period won't get any complaints from me....
