  1. Just found this report too - on Sunday: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-35280149 Not only were the walkers completely unprepared for hill climbing - they ignored the concerns of the other members of the party who realised it wasn't going to go well and turned back. "Lomond Mountain Rescue Team, who were involved in the search, said their footwear was "inadequate" and they had no torches, ice axes or crampons." "A rescue team spokesman said they were not equipped for tackling a Munro in "full winter conditions". As well as being poorly equipped, the walkers' mobile phones died because the batteries had not been fully charged before they left. The spokesman added: "It is clear that they did not fully comprehend the dangers of winter walking." I mean - come on!!!!
  2. Exactly - and if I was in to that sort of thing - I'm pretty sure that seeing Cairngorm had recorded a 125mph gust overnight - would be enough to convince me that today was not the sort of the day to go hill climbing - yes it's not the same hill, but it gives you an idea of the wind speeds much higher up. Maybe common sense isn't free anymore - are they taxing it now?
  3. Thanks @spindrift1980 I like snow as much as the next guy - but seriously - who really enjoys being in *that* - "let's go to the hills, we'll get frostbite, we may lose some limbs and succumb to hypothermia - we won't actually be able to talk to each other and breathing will be difficult - but let's go anyway - because it will be fun" ..... and the Darwin award goes to......
  4. This sort of thing drives me up the wall - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-38586981 Seriously - it would be different if there weren't warnings for severe weather - but there is, and have been for days. Why do people persist in going "oh well, we'll just go anyway"
  5. TIL there is a FakeForthBridge twitter account and it's hilarious! Thanks @Jo Farrow
  6. Hover over it and click on the cross hairs thing that appears at the top left of the quote and then hit delete.
  7. Now that there is a lot more data - you can really see how striking that really odd +3.3C temperature increase was very early this morning......
  8. I Don't "like" that you have no power - just acknowledging your post
  9. When Streetlights are trying to bend over - I describe it as a bit more than "a bit blowy" - you'd do well to present BBC Weather forecasts with those descriptions.....
  10. Yup - I was surprised last night with the strength of the wind - it definitely felt like it should have been higher than a Yellow warning for here! By the time I got to sleep at 6am Cairngorm had seen a 123mph max gust (it's currently reporting 100mph). Cairnwell was reporting 112mph (currently 98mph). The drive home update has downgraded the wind and sleet tonight a bit at least, but there is still strong winds and some sleet which will still be horizontal. Not a fun day to be outside!
  11. Hmmmm travel home from work looks a bit hairy - Horizontal Sleet!!!!!!
  12. Well..... this is an interesting temperature increase!
  13. Certainly no point in saving it now - the interest rate is pathetic..... When I have the money - it's not so much the snow I want to see - I've seen snow.... but a 15 day cruise around the arctic circle to see the Northern Lights would tick some of my boxes
  14. This is always an exciting sight..... but I wouldn't say I love it more than anything else.... I quite like money for example - probably a bit more than blizzards.
  15. If Catch is down for 8cm, I'm guessing I'll be around 4-6cm. But.... I'm expecting -10cm (that's right, a snow debt) - because - we probably owe snow back after 2010.
  16. ...and us.... don't forget us.... we'd definitely miss out. The only time we ever get anything is when a weather warning for heavy rain is issued for the West Coast - somehow that also means we will get drenched. But everything else is pretty much - even with a warning, it's going to miss us.
  17. I would be too.... it's the death knell as far as I'm concerned when the BBC forecasts snow.
  18. That was probably the same one we had 7 years ago - that generated 50+cm of snow overnight - it started off just being sleet that was driven in a very strong wind and quickly made it impossible to see out of the window - so I went to sleep and woke up to an eerie silence - I couldn't figure out why it was eerie - I just knew it was. Eventually I came to realise that it was eerie because there was no noise, no traffic, no people, nothing. I discovered when I tried to take the dog out - the reason there was no traffic - was because the road (a main bus route) was buried under at least 50cm of snow. There was of course - no Met Office warning either the night before or during that day. It looked a lot like this.....
  19. I'm not too worried yet - the 09/10 incident taught us - that once there is cold and lying snow - the GFS keeps trying to bring the warm back but never quite manages it - it's always like 7 days away. Much like our normal situation where the cold is 7 days away and never gets any closer.
  20. Northerly is a bit marginal here. We do best from North East and East.
  21. It's bad enough when the express propagates / creates it - but last night - The Scotsman joined in!! Claiming the Met Office say - and writing copious amounts of stuff from "Marco Petagna" who I have never heard of up to this point - unfortunately the Met Office have yet to respond if this is a real person working for them.
  22. I'm not sure this has actually happened yet - all winter. Sure there might be agreement in the very short term - but there always seems to be one model or one run that ends up bringing in the cold that the rest don't agree with and then the next run it drops it and one of the other models that didn't go for a cold evolution previously decides it will have a go after all. This might actually be the worst year the moderators have ever had to deal with in that thread - at least last year we knew all hope was lost early on....
  23. The Model Thread warning has me confused..... Does this mean the Model Thread is going to be more suicidal / aggressive than usual - or is this just a warning for people who might not have ventured in there before? It's a bit like the red button - I am kinda tempted to pop in to the thread now.... even though I know how it will end.
  24. Light entertainment...... can't stop laughing.
  25. No we only get the blue skies when there is snow everywhere else being delivered from the NW.....
