  1. At last! hit 0.0C now. Shame the precip has died off. A constant feed of light showers blowing in which are now all falling as snow. A nice covering on the roads and path again.

The Metoffices radar still showing a more organised band of precip forming out to see before pushing inland in the early hours. Not sure how far inland it could get though, that's if it forms at all!

A few more twists and turns to go i think. :)

  2. Still some decent wintry showers around here with snow in the heavier bursts thanks to evaporative cooling. Temp dropping to 0.2C in the showers but climbing up to 1.0C in the lighter stuff. Some giving a dusting before slowly thawing again.

A heavier line of showers pushing in tonight according to met radar and forecast. If they're heavy enough we may get a decent covering.

  3. I am a total amateur, but the heavy ppn that's currently off the coast of Great Yarmouth... is that likely to make it round to this region overnight? Or will it dwindle, divert or otherwise disappear?

(There's still stuff heading for Scarborough / North York Moors - is it falling as snow at Scarborough currently?)

It is now! Ground very wet after the sleet and thaw but it's all snow now and giving us a dusting (slushy on the roads).

Temp 0.4C and dew point 0.3C.

  4. Just came back from the superrmarket and thought our street looked so nice i parked up at home and walked back to take a pic... (Apologies to those in York, Scarborough and anywhere else less fortunate, but hope you enjoy the pretty trees lol!)

    Nice!

I really can't complain after 2 consecutive heavy falls last Monday and Friday in which most places missed out. Would have been nice to see more and thaw is a shame but as i type heavy snow coming down and giving us a covering again.

Dew point is 0.4C so theres not much in it and plenty more precip to come.

The fat lady may be warming up but she aint sung yet! lol!

  5. It's ruddy awful out there!! Went to York this morning and left snow in Scarborough. Arrived at York and it was sleeting! Just arrived back, roads very wet but ok.

Sleeting heavily now in Scarborough with the odd burst of snow in a biting wind. Major thaw going on though but we still have more snow here than in York!!

Temp 0.9C with Dew point 0.8C.

  6. It's all a bit mental out there! Rain, sleet, hail and snow all within 5 mins and then rinse and repeat for the last hour! To be honest it's blowing past the post that fast it's hard to tell what's falling!! I keep looking out to see a wet road and an ever diminishing snow cover.

    Temp 1.8C

    Dew Point now 1.5C. (Ouch!)

staying up to see if theres a major change when the heavy stuff arrives though.

  7. Flamin Nora it's windy! My windows keep shaking!

Unfortunately just sleet so far which is ruining our snowcover! Looks impressive blowing in on this wind though!

Pleased at Kris' explanation regarding the warm sector ahead of the main band. Met still have us for heavy snow all night too and reports of dropping temps once heavier stuff comes still gives a little room for optimism!

temp 2.2C with dew point at -0.9C.

  8. Slow thaw overnight here. Temp never dropped below 2.0C Although dew points remained ok and heard a few showers rattle against the window overnight in a fairly strong Easterly wind.

    Still unsure about tonight.

BBC news forecast looks snowy on the coast before turning to sleet /rain.

Metoffice location forecast have us down for heavy snow before turning to rain tomorrow afternoon.

Metoffice text forecast says no and sleet / rain.

Who knows. I'll be keeping an eye on the lampost though!

  9. Latest BBC forecast looks good for tomorrow night. Showed snow even on the coast. This ties in with the MO website forecast which shows heavy snow through the night before turning to sleet.

I'd be happy with one more decent dumping before it turns to rain!

Them showers didn't amount to much. Not sure about the next lot lurking out to sea. Again the meto's site forecast shows heavy snow showers for us from midnight and their radar backs this up.

They're going to have to intensify a bit first though!

  10. Talk on the page regarding model readings that what we currently are experiencing is not to do with SSW but its just our average January weather. They are indicating that the effect of the SSW is yet to happen and may start after a brief mild spell this time next week lasting on a couple of days! Thoughts from anyone that is a little more knowledgeable on this than me ( most folk)

Yeah, from what iv'e picked up this is infact the initial response to the SSW which occurs 5-7 days after the warming. The next stage could be 21 days after initial warming meaning the best may yet be to come. Needs remembering though that it may not even effect us but the metoffice seem fairly confident with this in their longer range output.

"However, colder weather and below average temperatures then probably come to dominate once more towards mid-month (feb). In terms of rain and snowfall, southern parts in particularly will probably start wetter than average, but trend to nearer normal by mid-month, while the north will probably see drier than average conditions for much of the period. Meanwhile, the frequency of snow events during this period may be greater than average."

Although they express uncertainty it's fairly unusual for them to give such detail in this period i think.

Just had a couple of light/ moderate graupel showers giving a litttle covering on the slushy bits. Plenty more showers lurking out to sea but they seem to lose intensity as they head towards us.

  11. Question?

Is there a way to work out your Dew Point from temp and humidity??

    Thanks

My weather station does it for me but theres a fault on it so when the dew point drops below zero it shows a dew point of -175.5C!!

    So,

I use this instead to work it out.

    http://www.decatur.de/javascript/dew/index.html

    Calculates it for you.

Slight thaw here today but we still have the bulk of the snowfall on the ground.

    Temp 1.9C. Humidity 69% giving a dew point of -175.5C!! or -2.8C! tease.gif

  12. Morning all.

Grey skies with the odd light burst of snow. Nothing major.

Slight thaw taking place too with a few drips coming off the roof. Nowhere else seems to be thawing so i may need better insulation!!

Temp a balmy 2.0C! Hum at 71% giving us a dew point of -2.3C.

Not expecting anything exciting over the next few days here (We've had our fair share!!).

Best get the sledge before the thaw kicks in! smile.png

  13. How much snowcover have you currently got and how well did you do from last mondays event?

Monday was fantastic here. The front stalled over us and gave us continuous snow from 11am to 9pm. We got around 10cm's. Last couple of days we had a slight thaw in places exposed to sun and last night we had about 5-6cm's still on the ground. We've had a further 12cm's today and it's still coming down. We sat under that streamer for the majority of the afternoon.

I'm guilty of winging a bit in the past as coastal marginality has gone against us so this last week has been epic! We've done better for snowfall this week than 2010 when the majority was marginal here on the coast.

I'm just hoping we keep this snowcover tomorrow so i can go get some photos before a thaw kicks in!

How much have you got there?

  14. Yep radar shows some snow coming again. Not sure how long they will last though. Temp very worrying here. 1.7c

Aye mate. Humidity dropping away though so we should maintain our Dew points. Currently 1.2C hhere but humidity dropped to 89% giving Dew point of -0.3. Marginal, but the right side at the moment! :)

where is the local bird table tonight??? Always shows a true depth!!!!

Haha! I'll nip out after this shower!
