  1. Some piccy’s of the white stuff taken from both inside and outside Solihull Core Library overlooking Touchwood, The Library Square and Homer Road Overall, I would give this snow event about an 8.7/10. A decent snowfall. Almost as much snow as that from early December... though that event still produced deeper snow!
  2. Am guessing there must be close to 10cms outside now! Oh, and it was about time you visited Matt, snow!... ??
  3. Hi Dancerwithwings, I think it’s to try simplify the viewing experience on mobiles or to save some data space (although the latter wouldn’t explain why you can view someone’s location on PC’s etc, lol ?). Or maybe it’s so mobile users can’t find out where people live... ...unless you click on the person’s name in a post ?
  4. Using the West Midlands one as an example, but the Met Office mentioned outbreaks of sleet and snow across all areas, possibly giving further accumulations is places. And yet, a number of us have had a few cm plus of accumulations, including some of those in the East Midlands. So it does seem as though the Met Office are under-estimating this event.
  5. Thanks to whoever dropped a box of dynamite on top of the Midlands Snow Shield this evening! ?
  6. Or ‘very good’ ? (although that doesn’t sound as effective, lol)
  7. Been nice and generally heavy here in Solihull for about an hour now! Wasn’t expecting it to be this bad, lol
  8. Will go for 5.7*C please - a cold start, but maybe warming up towards the end! 80mm of rainfall.
  9. Plus, I think it was yesterday that the GEM 12Z showed something similar with Lows to our South-West disrupting enough to continue the cold Easterly flow over the whole U.K for next week.
  10. The Met Office text summary forecast for the West Midlands sounds intetesting tomorrow with them mentioning some persistent snow moving up from the South through the morning. But the bad news (unless you hate the snow)... is it’s a different story for the East Midlands. No mention of any snow on their text summary for that area, apart from some showers in the morning. Maybe, though, the Met Office aren’t totally confident about what their Euro4 model is showing considering what they mention for the West Midlands. Be nice to think both the West and East Midlands could be part of the snowy alliance tomorrow. Otherwise, it really will probably be the case of relying on some savage snow showers again to provide some wintry goods!
  11. Would feel hard to believe it’s March tomorrow, but it’s nice to have Winter go off with a little bang ?
  12. Swear I heard a rumble of thunder with the recent snow shower that went through. But could just have been a strong gust of wind.
  13. Been some proper blizzard conditions here in the last 10 minutes with snow still falling. Been settling in places too!
  14. As longs as the 850 hPa temperatures stay below 0*C, which it certainly should do on Thursday (and again, hopefully on Friday and Saturday), freezing rain shouldn’t be an issue. Does seem to be continued uncertainty about where and how much snow could fall towards the end of this week. But would be really surprised if none fell at all between Thursday and Saturday. Especially the further South you are in the region (But hopefully all of us cold and snow fans will see plenty of the white stuff)! I must admit, I do love how the 12Z GEM keeps the cold continuing into next week with further disruption to Lows to our South-West resulting in a continuation of Easterlies over the region.
  15. Been on a trip to Bettws in Wales and their’s a light dusting there from a few earlier flurries!
  16. This makes me feel greedy ? But if correct, could see snow falling everyday. I think, to be fair, with tomorrow, even if the heavy stuff does miss most of us to the North, always a chance we could catch some heavy snow showers coming in from the East or North East!
  17. Having a very light snow flurry here in Solihull. Wasn’t expecting a shower this early
  18. Just a fairly little summary: It looks as though it’s going to get even colder within the next few days as the models show the blocking Scandinavian and Arctic High Pressure system nudging its way further West with Low Pressure systems out West in the Atlantic getting pushed to the South-West and South of the U.K. This unleashing some very cold and wintry conditions from the East. Some wintry flurries and snow showers look to steadily move in from the East from tonight and into tomorrow onwards, with these becoming more organised and invasive on Tuesday and Wednesday. With the winds from the East, the most frequent and powerful snow showers would be over Eastern UK where, locally, some large snow accumulations could arise. Longer spells of wintry weather are likely on those days, too, as the likes of the GFS etc show some disturbances and kinks in the isobars: (examples from the 12Z GFS) A chance of some of this wintry weather making its way over Western UK too, although those to the West of hilly and mountainous areas would probably see the best of the brightest, driest conditions in the next few days sheltered from the Easterly winds. Later on into the week, the models show the possibility of some heavy rain, sleet and snow poking up from the South (via Low Pressure from the Azores area) over the U.K. But, as others have addressed, there is uncertainty on the track the Low Pressure system could take. This could affect which areas see the most disruptive snowfall and also how much might fall as rain (depending how much milder air gets into the mix. Also, simce the Low would engage with very cold air at the surface, I’d imagine it would, at least, start as snow anywhere). Very possible, however, that the snow might not even reach the U.K at all and may just hang about over the Channel, Southwards. The likes of the ECMWF and UKMO are examples of the Low Pressure system just getting forced through the Channel maintaining the cold South-Easterly or Easterly flow over the whole of the U.K. The sort of scenario that can help prevent milder air trying to creep Northwards over us. Something to keep an eye on as it could certainly cause carnage for the U.K, especially Southern parts. With 850 hPa temperatures like these (again examples used from the GFS 12Z for this week): conditions over night will feel as though you’ve just stepped into a freezer - icy with sharp frosts at times. Very possible to see temperatures dropping to as low as -10*C and colder in places. Especially more so when the skies are clear and with slack winds. Accumulated snow would help with the bitter nights too. I think it would certainly bring the coldest weather we’ve seen in a good while anyway. Definitely wouldn’t recommend anyone going out in just t-shirts and shorts, and it would be slippy in places! After what the various weather fans have been through in the last few weeks or so, it’s fair to say that the Beast is on its way!
  19. Think the 12Z GEM had too much jelly this afternoon as its Easterly for the U.K. next Wednesday looks very ‘wobbly’!
  20. If this is how busy the thread gets on the run up to a bitter and potentially snowy spell, then I do wonder how busy it’ll get should some disruptive snow break loose over the region later next week! We’d probably get through 100 new South West and Central Southern England chat threads and it still wouldn’t be enough!
